Job Description:

The Carver College of Medicine Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology (Dr. Stewart lab) is seeking a Research Assistant. This Research Assistant is needed to conduct cutting-edge research focused on the molecular mechanisms of neuropsychiatric disorders with a particular focus on how biological sex modifies risk for mental illness. The candidate will be responsible for lab management and assist in performing experiments in isolated brain slices and mice using molecular, cellular, and biochemical techniques. This appointment is for a limited duration, anticipated length of one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year.


Duties will include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Maintain colonies of genetically modified mice; handling, breeding, weaning, and genotyping of the mice as well as maintaining electronic records of the colonies.
  • Perform laboratory maintenance and preparation of stock solutions.
  • Perform animal behavior experiments as well as biochemical/molecular experiments in isolated mouse tissues.
  • Maintain laboratory biosafety and animal use certifications.
  • Keep detailed written and organized records of experimental design, protocols, computer data analysis and raw data.

Two faculty members are Howard Hughes Institute Investigators, 12 are members of the Institute of Medicine and two are members of the National Academy of Sciences.

Required Qualifications:

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in a biomedical related field, animal science, veterinary technology or other related science program or equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience in an animal caretaking or research laboratory environment.
  • Previous animal research experience in a biomedical laboratory with hands-on research.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, and interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work independently while being reliable and efficient with time management.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with mouse behavioral and/or surgical approaches.
  • Experience with basic biochemical techniques such as immunohistochemistry, immunoblotting, or PCR.
  • Experience with analytic/statistical data analysis and/or programming.
