Position Summary

Thales is looking for a Systems Engineer whose main responsibilities include design, integration, and management of Thales’ ground-based navigational aids (NAVAIDs) for both Civil and Military domains with a primary focus on Thales’ Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN) systems over all product life cycles. Thales’ Navigation And non-radar Surveillance (NAS) business segment, part of the Thales Land and Air Systems Global Business Unit, architects solutions used by over two-thirds of all planes worldwide to take off and land safely. Our Ground Navigation portfolio offers a complete range of products, which includes the latest generation of ground-based navigational aids (NAVAIDs) (e.g. ILS, DME, TACAN & VOR) and non-radar surveillance (e.g. ADS-B). With more than 10,000 NAVAIDs and non-radar surveillance installed worldwide in 180 countries, we are world leaders in the NAVAIDs market.

In this position, you will act as the lead technical interface with the Customer in regards to the solution architecture, performance, deployment and issues raised during the project phase.  In this role, the systems engineer holds ownership of the technical needs to the project(s) they support. The systems engineer will have knowledge in electrical hardware design (preferably within the domain of RF signal electronics). As part of Integration Verification Validation & Qualification (IVVQ), the Systems Engineer will develop and execute test cases, plans, and procedures.  The Systems Engineer analyzes new situations, formulates new ideas; and generates/manages requirements with sufficient detail to start a new design and solve complex problems.  The Systems Engineer applies knowledge of hardware and software to generate highly innovative, cost effective, system-level design solutions. The Systems Engineer will be responsible to support effort estimation and Statement Of Work (SOW) development with further responsibility to serve as the subcontract technical manager for sub-tier supplier co-development programs as they arise. While performing these tasks they are responsible for meeting cost, delivery and performance targets.  The Systems Engineer works closely with Software, Hardware, Test and other systems engineers to ensure timely delivery of quality products. The Systems Engineer will report directly to the local Engineering Manager of the Thales NAS business segment.

Key Areas of Responsibility


  • Development and/or Maintenance of specification, design, implementation, integration, and testing of NAVAID products.

  • Creates, defines, analyzes, integrates and maintains overall system requirements including Hardware (HW) and Software (SW) Analysis and Definition.

  • Creates, defines, analyzes, test success criteria, use case analysis, test cases, test procedures, integration, verification and qualification tests along with recording test results and authoring test documents.

  • Performs effort and schedule effort estimates for current tasks and bids.

  • Acts as technical Point-Of-Contact (POC) for Thales customers. Communicates status to the project manager and/or project leader regularly.

  • Contributes to System level integration in terms of requirements knowledge and expectations, planning, and execution of hardware and software integration. Supports configuration management activities for design qualification testing.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Must be a US Person as defined in applicable law. Must be a U.S. Person as defined in applicable law, or otherwise authorized or eligible for authorization, to access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Systems, Electrical or Software Engineering, or another technical field with a minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience or a Master’s degree in Systems, Electrical or Software Engineering, or another technical field with 4+ years of relevant experience Software and/or Electrical development design experience.

  • Experience working with electrical hardware system design/development and/or test. Experience writing technical documentation for complex products. Experience managing requirements (e.g. using DOORS).

  • Proficient tracking and managing open issue and tasks (e.g. using Jira).

  • Must be self-starter and motivated to work in a fast-paced environment. Self-motivated, critical thinker with strong curiosity to learn. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience with interfacing directly with end customers. Ability to read and update schematics.

  • Schedule: Primarily in Overland Park, KS office with the potential availability of a hybrid work schedule.
