Undergraduate Academic Advisor



  • Advises students regarding academic core and/or departmental requirements, appropriate class selection, academic policies and procedures, and campus resources.
  • Assists students with identification of long-term goals and career plans. Works to position students to meet requirements for graduation while preparing them to achieve future career goals.
  • Assists college administrators in the recruitment and admissions of students.
  • Interprets University policies, procedures, and curriculum to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Maintains student and advising records in accordance with state/federal law and university regulations. Monitors student performance and resolves student issues with the implementation of academic resources and/or programs.
  • Coordinates advising programs such as peer advising, career placement, internships, or other college programs. Serves on appropriate department, college, and or campus advisor committees. Collaborates across departments on campus referrals when appropriate.
  • Provides information and statistical analysis to college and university units, such as enrollment statistics and student achievement. Analyzes data and prepares reports as appropriate.
  • Develops and oversees advising functions, applies specialized knowledge, and may assist in the training of new academic advisors and support staff.
  • Models the core values of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Academic Advisor.
  • Reports incidents of sexual harassment/misconduct to the University Title IX Coordinator.

Job Summary

Utilizes advanced advising knowledge, theory, and practical experience to serve as an academic liaison for students to identify academic and career goals, select appropriate courses, and plan for degree attainment. Manages small to medium-sized, moderately complex projects.


Essential Functions
  • The SCI Academic Advisor is part of a team providing comprehensive academic guidance to undergraduate students within the School, as well as assisting external students interested in the School's programs.
  • Through both in person and remote appointments, advisors assist their formal roster of students in reflecting on their interests, abilities, aspirations, and values. They help students explore various opportunities such as majors, minors, experiential learning, clubs, and resources for student development.
  • Advisors are expected to possess extensive knowledge of all majors and minors offered by SCI.
  • Collaboration with other university units is essential to support the student experience. This may involve collaborating with Academic Records to support the maintenance of accurate student records, Experiential Leaning to support exploration of service learning, study abroad, internships, Student Success to guide students through challenges, and other faculty and staff as needed.
  • Responsibilities include monitoring and updating student academic records, as well as certifying students for graduation in collaboration with the SCI Academic Records Office.
  • Advisors utilize online recourses for scheduling, notes, and administering flipped advising curriculum.
  • Advising discussions encompass various areas including providing information on policies and procedures, and exploring opportunities related to the School and the University.
  • Advisors consult with the Director of Academic Advising to determine appropriate support functions, which may include hiring and training peer advisors, assisting in event planning, participating in advising update meetings, attending recruitment events, and engaging in school and university-wide committees and working groups.

Little physical effort required. Duties are primarily sedentary.
