This position is for a staff accountant who is proactive, can work independently and as part of a team, and who has a thirst for acquiring knowledge as it relates to the entire real estate investment, management, & development process. This role will work closely with numerous members of the Property Accounting team to support the group and provide lease administration and lease abstracting, accounts payable, detailed tracking, journal entries and financial analysis toward the goal of accurate and timely financial reporting over the company's real estate portfolio.

Roles & Responsibilities:

The Staff Accountant will assist a group of accountants to process the accounting functions of general ledger/financial reporting, lease administration, and treasury management for a designated portfolio of owned properties. The Staff Accountant reports to the Assistant Controller with some direct supervision by a Senior Property Accountant. Areas of responsibility include AR/AP tracking and analysis, fixed assets tracking, cash administration support, financial reporting support and certain other accounting and development accounting administrative duties as requested. Lease administration includes document review, lease abstracting, database entry and updates.

Additional responsibilities may include 1-3 properties with mild/moderate complexity.

Assistance to a group of Senior Property Accountants, Assistant Controller, VP of Accounting, and Legal as follows:

  • Lease Administration: Review leases, amendments, and license agreements.
  • Coordinate with accounting, property management, and leasing teams to ensure accuracy of lease data entered in Yardi.
  • Accounts payable invoice processing, scheduling, and research.
  • New Vendor Set up.
  • Lease Abstracting- accounting section of the lease.
  • Track and report on critical dates and landlord/tenant obligations from lease execution through expiration.
  • Intercompany Receivable reconciliations.
  • Cash receipts research, tracking and analysis, and application Fixed assets reconciliations and tracking.
  • Support on implementation of system automation projects, data validation and analysis.
  • Financial statement workpaper preparation and support for own and at times other properties.
  • Administrative assistance with monthly and quarterly group deadlines and process completion.

Other accounting portfolio-level project as assigned:

  • Assist in the preparation of monthly and quarterly reporting packages for properties including:
  • Bank reconciliations.
  • Variance analysis.
  • Balance sheet, Reserves and Capital Expenditure analysis.
  • Review, analyze and record adjustments and accruals to general ledger.
  • Cash Receipts & assist in monitoring outstanding receivables with property management.
  • Prepare CAM & Property Tax and Utility reimbursements.
  • Assist with the preparation of annual budgets.
  • Assist with the preparation of property forecasts.
  • Prepare or assist with the preparation of annual audit and tax returns packages.
  • Prepare or assist with lender reporting requirements.

Qualifications and Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Accounting or Finance.
  • 1-2 years of real estate accounting experience.
  • Yardi or equivalent software proficiency. Experience with paperless AP systems is preferable.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Proven organizational skills.
  • Self-starter capable of finding solutions with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to interact with co-workers, tenants, and vendors in an articulate, courteous, and business-like manner at all times.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities while under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Adaptability to changing demands.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and an ability to decipher information within commercial real estate leases is critical.
