WHAT YOU'LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR IN THIS ROLE

The Thermal Utility Manager will be responsible for leading and oversight of a supervisor and a team of technicians responsible for the repair and preventive maintenance of Ammonia Refrigeration, HVAC, Compressed Air, and Steam boiler systems. The successful candidate will also be highly involved in the PSM/RMP programs to help ensure we maintain compliance with USDA, OSHA, EPA, and DHS regulations and all employees are following strict work safety guidelines. The Thermal Utilities Manager will create a positive team-based culture to support sustainable continuous improvements, root cause analysis, skills training, empowerment, and accountability.

JOB DUTIES:
  • Oversees/supports the function and reliability of the utility systems and associated equipment by optimizing a preventive and predictive maintenance program; operating and testing systems and equipment; restoring, repairing, rebuilding, and/or replacing faulty or inoperative components and parts
  • Managing the PSM/RMP program will include supporting documentation for CUPA, USEPA, Cal-OSHA, Fed-OSHA and RAGAGEP. Updating the written documents for RMP/PSM/CalARP. Assist in preparing and maintaining Process Safety Information. Leading the Process Hazard Analysis and correcting issues that result from audits in a timely manner.
  • Establish and monitor the weekly, monthly, yearly maintenance plans to ensure essential maintenance is completed, review compliance for work orders for direct reports, verifying completion in a timely and safe manner.
  • Can train others in best practices with mechanical and electrical systems, ammonia refrigeration systems, boilers, industrial air compressors, and HVAC.
  • Develop key performance indicators to understand overall equipment reliability trends.
  • Implement vibration monitoring on motors >50hp and any critical equipment
  • Remains current with state and federal regulations and codes relative to utility systems design and operation.
  • Ensures policies and standards are followed in both capital project implementation as well as daily maintenance.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently to ensure all projects are on time and on budget.
  • Identify and recommend new technology and methodologies to support and to ensure efficiency, performance, and reliability of equipment & processes.
  • Consult or negotiate with suppliers and contractors to prepare quotes and SOW
  • Development and optimize of Ammonia Refrigeration and Boiler system Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) and train employees on their use and ensure implementation.
  • Audits/reviews all paperwork including maintenance records, incident reports and root cause analysis.
  • Contribute and adhere to companies "best practices" within the department.
  • Monitor and enforce policies, plant procedures and programs with employees, contractors, vendors, consultants and suppliers (i.e. safety, food safety, regulatory, etc.).
  • Analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills required.
  • Must possess a high level of mechanical & electrical aptitude and be an effective communicator, mentor, and trainer.
  • Detail-oriented, highly organized, and committed to superior quality.
  • Able to work in a team environment where honest communication, a positive attitude, engagement, and personal accountability is expected.
  • Understands, leverages, and champions the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) per established procedures - *Experience with Oracle is a plus
  • Experience with continuous improvement, processes/procedures, as well as equipment optimization.
  • Experience with 5S implementation and sustainability.
  • Effective written and verbal communication as well as interpersonal skills to work in a collaborative team environment that includes shared responsibilities, establishing and maintaining good working relationships with others to support team and company objectives and a willingness to work in all areas of the facility
  • Review scheduled work activities and adjust workloads to compensate unscheduled absences, changing priorities, and special projects.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Minimum Qualifications:
  • At least 7 years' experience leading utility teams is preferred. High School diploma required. Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of five years industrial maintenance experience in ammonia refrigeration. RETA certifications in CARO and CIRO is preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience with boilers, air compressors, and HVAC systems; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable.
  • Proven ability to understand a PSM program, elements of PSM, MI audits, and familiarity with IIAR.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop cross functional relationships, manage projects through their full life cycle (idea to implementation), and break down complex problems into simple solutions.
  • Excellent management skills including supervision, leadership, communication and planning.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize tasks and meet constant deadlines with strong attention to detail and quality control.
  • Able to work off-shifts, weekends & extended shifts (i.e. 12 hrs.) as needed.

Physical Demand:
  • Mobility: Standing, walking, and handling for prolonged periods of time; occasional sitting, lifting, and carrying.
  • Other factors: Ability to work odd shifts, including overtime and weekends when business requires.
  • Will be required to pass a fit test & able to wear a respirator and any associated PPE related to the role.
  • Works in the plant exposed to cold/heat, wet and/or humid conditions.
  • Exposed to moving mechanical parts.
  • Exposed to caustics, including but not limited to acids and chlorines while cleaning.
