Job Description:

Title- Senior Energy Storage Engineer

Basic Function:

As a part of the Engineering team, the Sr. Energy Storage Engineer will provide subject matter expertise on Energy Storage design, optimization, final engineering, and construction permitting of utility-scale energy storage projects. The Sr. Energy Storage Engineer will have the ability to work independently while being able to contribute successfully to cross-functional teams. The Sr. Energy Storage Engineer will also have excellent organizational skills, be able to manage multiple projects at once, have excellent follow-through skills, and will have the ability to meet strict deadlines.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and manage Energy Storage design standards and technical exhibits to set requirements for quality, presentation standards, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Support the Engineering and Construction teams on the design review and design optimizations for the energy storage projects.
  • Develop the preliminary site layouts, equipment sizing, and electrical BOP for the energy storage projects.
  • Provide engineering support to discretionary permitting and technical compliance during development and construction phases.
  • Optimize project designs by drawing upon knowledge of Lithium-ion cells, battery packs, BESS integration, PCS, and BMS/EMS including best practices, specifications, cost, efficiency, code compliance, performance, and reliability.
  • Perform project design reviews at specific milestones throughout the final design process and coordinate other internal reviews and approvals by key stakeholders, as needed.
  • Work with the EPC and manage the energy storage-related RFIs and submittals during the energy storage project construction.
  • Work with the construction team to manage the pre-commissioning, commissioning, and substantial completion tests in the storage projects.
  • Assist in final detailed design review process, construction administration, and commissioning of storage projects;
  • Support the engineering tasks on energy storage system modeling, interconnection applications, and project development.
  • Willing to visit the equipment manufacturers (battery cells, PCS, etc.) to provide technical inputs to the procurement team.
  • Review and understand the energy storage technology landscape and future trends.
  • Lead the development and execution of energy storage pilots for the Innovation team to test novel and promising energy storage technologies including, but not limited to liquid metal batteries, flow batteries, CAES, flywheel, and thermal batteries.
  • Serve as an Engineering resource for Energy Storage to internal organization, providing as-needed support to the greater organization.
  • Provide technical review and guidance on equipment selection and approved vendor list.
  • Support O&M team with technical knowledge and troubleshooting.
  • Support Procurement Team with development of approved vendor list by performing technical due diligence reviews.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Minimum five (5) years' experience in utility-scale energy storage.
  • BSEE specializing in Power Systems, or other applicable technical field from ABET-accredited University, MS a plus, PE license a plus.
  • Full project life cycle experience from design, to construction, commissioning, and service.
  • Demonstrated strong engineering, design, and communication skills, and an ability to work in a dynamic team environment to think outside the box and solve traditional problems in new ways.
  • Understanding energy storage system modeling, in hybrid with solar or stand-alone (technical and financial modeling in different use cases).
  • Ability to read tariffs, project contracts, permitting documents, and interconnection agreements.
  • In-depth knowledge of Lithium-Ion battery chemistries, battery pack assembly, BESS container or enclosure integration and fabrication, bi-directional power conversion systems, and BMS/EMS/SCADA platforms.
  • Experience working with EPCs on design and technical problem-solving.
  • Familiar with the energy storage standards and codes (IEEE, NEC, ANSI, UL, NFPA, etc.).
  • Familiar with the US energy market and solid understanding of the energy storage revenue streams and valuation.
  • Expertise in Excel modeling and/or Python programming is a plus.
  • Expertise in the energy storage techno-economical modeling (battery optimal sizing/dispatch, IRR calculations, modeling revenues streams, etc.
  • Expertise in AutoCAD and MS Office.
  • Familiarity with mathematic optimization is a plus.
  • Familiarity with AI-based forecasting methods is a plus.

Travel Requirements

The position requires up to 15% domestic and international travels.

Location: Denver, San Francisco Bay Area, or remote option available

Base Pay - $110,000 - $125,000

Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, such as skill set, experience, certifications, specific work location, and other non-discriminatory factors permitted by law. Base pay may vary per location due to differences in the cost of living.

The total compensation package for this position may also include an annual discretionary bonus, full Health & Wellness Benefits package, generous Long Term Incentive plan designed with our partnership mentality in mind, and other applicable incentive perks as outlined in any formal offer made. The final compensation package will be discussed with the candidate during the final stages of the hiring process.
