Job Description:

As a member of the Division of Student Life Human Resources Team, the Assistant Director will function as a strategic business partner providing leadership, consultation, and guidance on all human resources (HR) areas. This position will be responsible for executing a full range of HR responsibilities from a collaborative, customer-service-oriented perspective. The Assistant Director will serve as an HR Representative for a selection of units within the Division of Student Life. This Assistant Director role will have a particular focus on supporting initiatives contained within the Division of Student Life strategic plan from a leadership & development lens. The Assistant Director will also be expected to assist with ensuring the Division of Student Life is making forward progress toward becoming a welcoming and respectful organization through demonstrating transformational leadership. This position will also be responsible for providing supervision and leadership to direct reports.


The Assistant Director reports to the Senior Human Resources Director for the Division of Student Life.



Specific Job Duties and Tasks




  • Partner with leadership to develop organizational strategies and achieve organizational objectives that align with Division priorities.
  • Participate in identifying and analyzing key performance indicators to help develop strategic plans.
  • Provide advice and direction to leadership on issues related to organizational culture and values that attract, retain and motivate staff (i.e., respect, work/life balance, creating a welcoming environment).
  • Advise, consult and counsel staff and supervisors on all areas of human resources.
  • Oversee, assist and/or participate in departments in recruitment activities for compliance with division and university, federal and state rules, regulations and policies.
  • Participate in evaluating positions for posting, career development requests, and market adjustments.
  • Hire, train, coach, and administer corrective action for staff supervised and train and assist in the development of human resources staff.
  • Assist in formulation and implementation of division HR procedures and best practices.
  • Partner with university Faculty and Staff Disability Services to satisfy FMLA and ADA requirements.
  • Oversee medical leaves to ensure they are in compliance with University, federal and state regulations.
  • Promotes a workplace environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated, where every individual is empowered to make a positive impact, and in which workplace concerns are addressed effectively.
  • Effectively uses a broad range of methods in communicating complex ideas to diverse populations.
  • Monitors profession/field/discipline for trends and implements innovative solutions to enhance service.


This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

Required Qualifications:




  • A Master's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current experience (typically 3-5 years) managing a variety of Human Resources responsibilities in an HR role within a large, complex organization.
  • Current experience (typically 3-5 years) providing strategic, leadership & development support to an organization as an HR business partner.
  • Commitment to and alignment with the values of the Division of Student Life, including demonstrated active commitment to creating and maintaining a welcoming and respectful environment.
  • Superior interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner while creating, promoting, and sustaining an inclusive environment.
  • Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to determine the root cause of organizational challenges and find/create resolutions that are in the best interest of the department.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of current federal and state laws, statues, regulations, policies, and directives pertaining to HR
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer software applications including Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), and HR Information Systems.



Desirable Qualifications:




  • Experience providing HR support in a college or university setting.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Experience developing and presenting employee/supervisory training and/or administering onboarding programs.
