Responsibilities

Strategically develops story pitches for national media that will help enhance FSU's reputation and advance institutional goals. Helps maintain consistent coverage for FSU in media outlets outside the state of Florida. Identifies opportunities for university faculty experts to be featured in national news stories. Analyzes media coverage to identify story lines, trends and themes that may provide opportunities to feature or quote key FSU leaders.


Performs media relations duties including processing inquiries for information, public records and interview requests from external media. Provides media relations services at university events and coordinates news conferences and photo opportunities as necessary. Cultivates and maintains relationships with media to enhance the university's media relations strategy. Builds, develops and maintains relationships with journalists, specifically focusing on national media outlets.


Produces university news releases, media advisories, feature stories and web content in AP Style. Writes and edits statements and newsletters for university leadership. Edits news stories developed by University Communications team members and campus communicators.


Updates the university's online news website and homepage to include news, graphics, video, social media content using content management systems, social media platforms and photo editing applications.


Collaborates with FSU campus communicators and university leadership to identify and develop content that will help support the university's strategic goals and enhance the university's national reputation among the general public and peer academic institutions.


Assists with issues management and crisis communications.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree and three years of experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and seven years of experience. (Note: a combination of post high school education and experience equal to seven years.)

This position is a member of the University Communications team that works with the administration, faculty and staff to develop, coordinate and distribute news content that will generate positive national publicity about the university. This position cultivates and maintains relationships with media to enhance the university's media relations strategy, focusing on the national level. This position analyzes media coverage to identify story lines, trends and themes that may provide opportunities to feature or quote key FSU leaders. This position writes university news releases, statements and media responses and assists with issues management and crisis communications.
