Posted in Other 13 days ago.

Job Description:

Who We Are:

As a recognized leader in space science research and spacecraft instrumentation, we are helping to reveal the secrets of our solar system and the universe. We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with demonstrated experience in magnetohydrodynamics to join the Department of Solar and Heliospheric Physics. The postdoctoral researcher will collaborate with our team in ongoing studies of the solar dynamo and the solar near-surface shear layer.

Objectives of this Role:

  • Conduct numerical modeling of the solar convection zone and the solar near-surface shear layer.

  • Design numerical experiments that isolate the role played by small-scale magnetism in redistributing stellar angular momentum.

  • Contribute to the continued development of open-source stellar convection software packages such as STABLE, Rayleigh, Dedelus and Coral.

  • Participate in solar group proposals that support the strategic growth of the department.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

  • Independently develop and implement numerical experiments and theoretical investigations designed to examine angular momentum transport and magnetic field generation in stellar interiors.

  • Actively collaborate with members of the COFFIES DRIVE center to develop models of the solar near-surface-shear layer.

  • Perform analysis and visualization of fluids simulation data.

  • Assess resulting trends in light of physical conditions expected inside stellar interiors.

  • Present and disseminate research results at professional meetings and conferences.

  • Submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals.

  • Contribute to weekly SWRI Solar group meetings and Boulder Convection Group meetings.

Requirements:

  • Requires an PhD in Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Planetary Science, Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Solar Physics or Related Field.

  • 1-3 years: Post Ph.D. experience in the study of magnetohydrodynamics and the solar dynamo.

  • 1-3 years: Post Ph.D. experience programming using compiled languages such as FORTRAN and C/C++ .

  • 1-3 years: Post PhD experience in data analysis using either the Python or IDL programming languages.

  • 1-3 years: Post PhD experience in the application of computational fluid dynamics software (e.g., STABLE, ASH, Rayleigh, Dedelus) to the study of stellar dynamos.

Special Requirements:

Work assignment is in Boulder, Colorado. This is a 1 year limited term assignment.
