Job Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:



A Van Driver provides transportation for elderly and disabled, to and from medical appointment. Good judgement, common sense, and safe driving practices are an every day occurrence. Van Drivers may be required to assist in other operational duties such as special events, and/or needs as determined by management.



PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:




Transportation Associate Duties:



• Operates vehicles in accordance with MGB Healthcare System policies as well as in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.


• Inspects vehicle at the beginning and end of each shift to ensure operating effectiveness.


• (A walk-around inspection of all safety-related items will be included in the inspection.)


• Reports any damage and inoperative or inoperable equipment to the Admin. Manager.


• Maintains the interior vehicle while the vehicle is under operator's control.


• Maintains an accurate log documenting numbers of passengers, number of trips completed or other information which might be requested.


• Performs other duties as assigned.


• Maintains the outside grounds, sweeping, brush removal, weeding. General upkeep.


• Supplies back up coverage to Materials Management


When operating passenger coach or passenger van-type vehicles:


• Transports passengers in a safe and courteous fashion between designated stops on an established route or to and from specific sites as part of a specially arranged trip.


• Ensures the safety and comfort of passengers on the vehicle.


• Assists elderly and or handicapped passengers to board and alight from the vehicle.


• Maintains schedule and established routes.


• Uses discretion to deviate from prescribed routes when environmental conditions and/or special events create traffic congestion (Snow Storms).


• Requests identification badge from all passengers.


• All assignments are completed in a safe and timely fashion.


• Will supply coverage/back up for Inventory Controller



Outreach Duties:



§ Coordinate with Health Center staff and providers to ensure high quality and accessible health care. Serve as a resource to the primary care practices. Provide linkage between the community, the patient, and the Health Center.




  • Assists providers and patients to and from home visits.



  • Participates in community-based meetings and events.



  • Participates in the Bunker Hill Day Parade as part of the HealthCenter team






Qualifications

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:



Proficient Computer skills required (ie. Excel, MS Outlook)


Good Organization


Ability to work independently


Maintain current training status in the Transportation of Hazardous Materials, Uniform Precautions, and Fire and Safety in accordance with Partners Healthcare System policies and procedures.


Reports for duty drug-free and remains drug-free during tour of duty in accordance with hospital policy.


Good customer service/communication skills.


Experience with driver services and/or working with the elderly.


Ability to accept flexible schedule and works well with others.


Bilingual/bicultural Spanish preferred


Prior experience in ordering/maintaining inventory


Ability to perform light maintenance duties: snow removal, changing light bulbs, lifting of boxes, moving furniture


LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS (if applicable):


Massachusetts Class D Drivers License


EDUCATION:


High School Diploma or Equivalency required



WORKING CONDITIONS:



Long periods of sitting.


Must be able to walk, stand, stoop, squat, life 10-50 lbs. without restrictions and climb stairs.


Able to communicate orally and in writing.


Must be able to focus on specific tasks despite noise volume and presence of other activities in shared spaces.


DEGREE OF TRAVEL:


Working in various organizational and community settings/buildings/locations.


DEGREE OF DISRUPTION TO ROUTINE, OVERTIME:


Must be able to adapt to client status and needs, as directed.


Evenings and weekends as needed to meet goals of Health Center.


Schedule changes daily due to staffing, client's condition, and new patients.


SAFETY HAZARDS IN JOB:


Possible infections from clients.


Possible unsafe neighborhoods.


May be exposed to all temperatures and types of weather.
