Job Description Summary

The Wheelchair Technician will customize, assembles, install, adjust, and repair manual and power wheelchairs and seating components as specified by the therapist or supervisor. Participates in the maintenance of hand and machine tools and inventory of stock wheelchair, seating components and parts.

Job Description



The Wheelchair Technician will:


  • Fits patients for wheelchairs as specified by a therapist or supervisor, taking into account height, weight, diagnosis, prognosis, clinical and functional goals, and environment to determine appropriate wheelchair base and type of assistive devices or modifications that best suit the patient need.


  • Assembles, adjusts, modifies and repairs wheelchairs and seating components utilized by inpatients as specified by a therapist or supervisor.


  • Assembles and provides customized configuration, adjustment and programming of computerized electronics systems of power chairs, including the wheeled mobility base, adaptive drive controls and seating system and functions.


  • Provides instruction of proper use of the equipment particularly with power wheelchairs and alternative drive controls.


  • Performs intermediate level mechanical and electrical wheelchair repair.


  • Performs data entry functions as relates to chair assignment and processing.


  • Assists in the cleaning, disinfecting and inventory maintenance of stock wheelchairs, seating components and parts.


  • Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.




Reporting Relationships
Reports directly to the Lead Wheelchair Technician


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required


  • High school diploma or equivalent required.


  • One year of experience in rehabilitation technology or related field preferred.


  • Wheelchair technician certification including mechanics of manual and power wheelchairs, power electronics configuration, maintenance and repair, electronics programming, seating set up and repair desired.


  • Ability to operate hand tools, power hand tools and machine tools including, but not limited to, a table saw, band saw, drill press, and disc and belt sanders.


  • Analytical ability to interpret therapist specifications.


  • Visual acuity and gross/fine motor skills required for the safe and efficient use of equipment, tools and materials.


  • Strong customer service and communication skills needed to interact with patients, coworkers, healthcare professionals, and vendors.




Working Conditions
Occasional exposure to loud noises, unpleasant odors and dust.
Use of appropriate protective gear and environmental systems are provided.
Work requires operations of various hand tools, power tools, and machine tools.
