Job Description:

The Senior Accountant and Operational Support Specialist provides financial and operational support to the College of Education Dean's Office, Office of Student Services, and the departments of CEA, CASMA, and UI REACH. This position provides financial support for all units as assigned by monitoring, reviewing, and reconciling financial transactions and preparing, monitoring and reporting on unit budgets. The position assists the Director of Finance and Budget Operations on projects related to the budgeting process, year-end closing, monitoring accounts, and ensuring compliance with financial policies and procedures. The position provides operational support relating to human resources and information management for CEA and CASMA. Budget planning, management, review and reconciliation of accounts for numerous contracts and grants is a crucial aspect of the position, along with the ability to act independently with respect to all aspects of the position.


This is a 100% effort position (40 hours/week), Monday - Friday. Hybrid options may be considered after training period. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.



Position responsibilities include:

  • Create and share summary financial reports with center directors, Dean, COE Budget Officer and others during regularly scheduled center budget meetings, typically 2x per year.
  • Prepare other financial and budget reports to assist with budget management and oversight.
  • Create and maintain internal financial reports for departments, including revenues, expenditures and spenddown of all contracts and grants, to ensure funds are fully expended as allowed.
  • Review, analyze, and reconcile Transaction Detail Reports (TDR) monthly for all assigned departmental and collegiate accounts.
  • Assist with tracking non-recurring commitments made by COE Deans to assist with budget projections.
  • Track and monitor collegiate spending programs.
  • Provide guidance on UI and COE purchasing policies and procedures to departments and staff across the college.
  • Anticipate, manage and resolve operational problems including hardware, software, and equipment for CEA and CASMA.
  • Purchase software licenses for CEA and CASMA center staff. Maintain spreadsheet with all software licensing information.
  • Keep up to date on relevant trainings including: FERPA, cash handling, and procurement cards.
  • Create general ledger entries (GLJE) and correcting entries (WebCV) as needed.
  • Review financial transactions in workflow.
  • Recommend and assist in the development of training for accounting and administrative staff across the College.
  • Responsible for post-award administrative and financial responsibilities for CEA and CASMA .

Education Requirement

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.



Required Qualifications

  • Experience (typically 3-5 years) in budget management, financial analysis and reporting including the knowledge of, and ability to, apply policies and practices for planning and administering a budget.
  • Typical experience is 1-3 years accounting, auditing, and/or budgeting experience.
  • Working knowledge of and the ability to use accounting methods, processes, and tools for maintaining and preparing financial statements and reports.
  • Demonstrated careful attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to process information with high levels of accuracy.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks effectively and proactively establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with leadership strategic thinking.
  • Extensive proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work with a variety of individuals in a constructive and collaborative manner.



Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures and UI systems such as GLDSS, TDRs, UIRIS and HRIS transaction system.
  • Master's degree in Accounting, Business or related field.
  • Experience with complex automated financial systems.
  • Experience reviewing processes and transactions and providing recommendations on process improvements.
  • Experience with project planning and project management.
