Department Specific Functions



This SCCC Scientist position acts as the Assistant Director of the Flow Cytometry Shared Resource (FCSR). Under the guidance of the FCSR Director, the primary responsibility of this position is to expand the scale and scope of the FCSR's optical imaging services to meet the needs of a growing research community. Develops and maintains state-of-the-art optical imaging services, including confocal microscopy and super high-resolution microscopy (and other imaging modalities as needed). Plans and oversees infrastructure (space, equipment, personnel) needed to provide high quality services. Oversees evaluation, implementation, and optimization of existing and emerging optical imaging technologies, and participates in methods development and application optimization, in collaboration with facility users and vendors. Assists in the development of training procedures and materials for users and staff to ensure quality of services and of data obtained in the facility. Develops and implements standard operating procedures (SOPs) for instrument setup, quality assessment and control (QA/QC), data management and usage tracking, to ensure a high level of research rigor and reproducibility and efficient operations. Oversees maintenance of facility's optical imaging instruments and acts as primary liaison with equipment manufacturers and support vendors to minimize down-time. Provides consultation and training for faculty, trainees, students, and staff on optimal use and potential applications of optical imaging platforms. Provides support for data analysis, troubleshooting, and invoicing for services. Works closely with the FCSR director, the Cancer Center's administration team, and the scientific leaders of the Cancer Center, to ensure services provided are accessible, cost-effective, and high-quality, and meet the needs of researchers. Assesses quality of services, tracks and reports on optical imaging instrument use and performance and works with the FCSR Director in the development of annual budgets and annual status reports provided to the Associate Director for Shared Resources and other Cancer Center leadership.



Department Specific Qualifications



A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience working in an imaging core facility or shared resource covering a variety of optical imaging modalities, including super high-resolution microscopy preferred. Experience with a leadership role in a shared resource is preferred. Must enjoy working with others, have initiative, and be reliable. Attention to detail and multitasking abilities are critical, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Excellent computer and communication skills are required. Prefer strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills with proven ability to apply creative approaches to complicated questions.

  • Knowledge and expertise of optical imaging-associated activities, particularly for sample preparation, image acquisition, data management and data analysis.

  • Ability to work closely with individuals from a broad range of fields.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including ability for verbal communication in both small and large group settings.

  • Ability to multi-task effectively and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of team.
