TITLE: Career and Technical Education Advisor



POSITION NO.: P08423



SECTION: Workforce Development



HIRING SALARY: $38,000 - $42,000 annually; all salary calculations to start at the minimum salary



HOURS: 8:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M., Monday - Friday; (hours may vary to include evenings and weekends)

MAJOR FUNCTION: The Career and Technical Education Advisor is housed within Workforce Development and will report to the Director of Continuing Workforce Education. This position is responsible for independent and specialized work in academic advisement, registration, orientation, and related functions for Career and Technical Education programs to include clock hour and continuing workforce education programs.



  • Adheres to the Guided Pathways theory to provide holistic and comprehensive advising services for assigned caseload. Ensures advisees are advised individually and/or in groups regarding academic requirements, course selection and registration, academic policies and procedures and career goals. Provides guidance to/for important/relevant campus resources including career services, student accessibility services, academic support services and transfer requirements or opportunities.

  • Assists with walk-in advising general questions on Division offerings. Conducts program orientations and counseling/advising related to retention.

  • Assists Division staff in promoting programs and resources to CTE and CWE students. Serves as a representative at community and group recruitment activities.

  • Performs related duties to meet Division of Workforce Development advising goals. Conducts retention meetings with key staff.

  • Seeks out and actively participates in professional development offerings annually.




MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: A Bachelor's degree in a related area from an accredited college or university and three (3) years of related experience.




SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS WILL DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING: Knowledge of TCC policy and procedures, Knowledge of best practices in academic advising, student development and retention, Knowledge of Microsoft software and experience working with a student records system, Knowledge of program assessment, Knowledge of TCC graduation requirements and university transfer information and/or career placement, Knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, Knowledge of crisis intervention strategies and ability to deal with stressful situations, Skill, accuracy, and speed using a personal computer, Ability to travel in the tri-county area, Ability to advise students in career and educational planning, Ability to plan and implement intervention strategies for students academically at-risk, Ability to work independently, Ability to work with a diverse population, Ability to follow written and oral instructions, Ability to plan, organize and coordinate multiple work assignments, Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, Ability to lead student advising groups, Ability to speak in public, Ability to make independent judgments.
