Job Description:

The Deputy Athletics Director provides leadership for assigned areas of oversight and coordination for the activities of the Office of the Athletics Director. This position is a highly visible leadership role requiring an individual with outstanding interpersonal skills, including diplomacy, tact and political savvy.

The individual in this position must be able to leverage the influence of the Athletics Director to achieve departmental goals, while effectively leading and managing assigned responsibilities and projects. The successful candidate will be assertive and confident yet approachable and respectful, with a proven track record in building collaborative relationships across organizational lines and with key constituencies.

Above all, this person must demonstrate the highest ethics and confidentiality inherent in such a position. The Deputy Athletics Director is responsible for representing and advising the Athletics Director in various administrative matters across the Department, including the overall management of the Senior Staff, liaison to the President's Office, as well as overseeing major projects and initiatives.

Responsible for the strategic and effective leadership of the external operations and administration for the Colgate Athletics Department including:


  • Finance and Business Operations

  • Facilities

  • Game Day Operations

  • Event Scheduling

  • Marketing and Promotions

  • Corporate Sponsorship

  • Athletics Communications and Multimedia

  • Ticket Operations

  • Athletics Fundraising




Other Expectations:


  • Represent the division in the absence of the director

  • Executive level leadership for the department

    • Serve on department leadership team

    • Provide direction, oversight, and leadership to PERA

    • Serve on relevant campus committees as PERA representative



  • Ensure effective communication of departmental strategies and goals to coaches, administrators, student-athletes, and other internal campus constituents

  • Act as PERA's lead brand manager, ensuring that items including, but not limited to signage, branding, uniforms, facilities, etc., meet identity guidelines and standards

  • Effective and strategic development of a comprehensive marketing and promotions plan for all 25 Division I NCAA Sports and other departmental areas to include all channels and media, social media, print, television, electronic media, etc.

  • Effective and strategic development of the ticket office and sales

  • Effective and strategic development of communications strategies across all aspects of PERA. To include:

    • Develop and implement a department wide vision for working with external stakeholders such as media outlets, community partners, corporate partners, fans and alumni.



  • Secure and ensure positive relations with external constituents in advertising and sponsorships; oversees corporate marketing strategies

  • Liaison to Athletics Advancement team and Director of Athletics on fundraising priorities, goals and initiatives

  • Ensure positive relationships between the division and key stakeholders, to include alumni, local community, fans, parents, coaches, student-athletes, faculty and other University constituents

  • Responsible for the effective supervision of staff as assigned. Ensures selection and hiring of high quality employees; ensures appropriate distribution of work assignments and high quality of employee work product; ensures fair and accurate performance assessments and feedback to include identifying areas for professional development and documenting and conducting disciplinary measures, as needed. Responsible for providing fair and accurate input to supervisor regarding employment status (hire, promotion, salary increases, termination); ensures the creation of effective opportunities and programs for employee mentoring, development and sustained performance

  • Provide sport supervision and continued evaluation of assigned varsity sport programs through effective oversight, communication and collaboration with Head Coaches. This will include sustained performance and execution in the following areas:

    • Fiscal responsibility

    • Scheduling conference and nonconference matches, practices, strength and conditioning, etc.

    • Recruiting/roster management

    • Student-athlete welfare and academic progress

    • Manage disciplinary situations with coaching staff and student-athletes

    • Compliance with conference, NCAA and university rules

    • Evaluate and approve fundraising initiatives in partnership with University Advancement

    • Support positive Head Coach relations with internal and external stakeholders

    • Evaluation of student-athlete experience

    • Evaluation of competitive success

    • Evaluate job performance, develop and support the professional growth of all direct reports



  • Role model positive behaviors and leadership for student-athletes, coaches and staff

  • Maintain personal compliance with all relevant governing bodies to include:

    • NCAA

    • Patriot League

    • ECAC Hockey

    • Athletics Department

    • University policies



Professional Experience/Qualifications


  • Ten (10) years of professional experience at NCAA member institution(s)

  • At least five (5) of supervisory responsibilities

  • Ten (10) years of professional experience at NCAA Division I member institution(s)

  • Seven (7) years of supervisory responsibilities

  • Five (5) years serving as a member of an athletics department senior leadership team

  • A Bachelor's degree is required

  • A Master's degree is preferred
