Description Overview

To provide scientific and technical support to existing Rx and OTC products working closely with regulatory, quality, research and development, legal and operations, develop and implement manufacturing processes for scale-up of new, current, transferred or reformulated products, and investigate and evaluate product failures and recommends corrective actions.

Scope of the Role

  • Collaborate with new product development scientists to transfer new or reformulated liquid and semisolid products for manufacturing through the scale-up process.
  • Transfer of any manufacturing process of liquid and semisolid products between different locations of the company and also to and from a contract manufacturing facility.
  • Develop and/or evaluating manufacturing processes, such as selection of equipment, order of introduction of ingredients, temperature requirements, speed of equipment operation and other variables which may affect formulation processes differently between laboratory and manufacturing conditions.
  • Develop protocols to gather data during pilot plant testing to determine whether these variables will be significant and works with research scientists and technicians to gather and evaluate this data.
  • Recommend process changes to address identified scale-up problems.
  • Investigate and documents manufacturing failures associated with liquid and semi-solid products. In this capacity, the incumbent inspects products, manufacturing or packaging equipment and SOPs, identifies potential causes of the failure, develops tests to assess these factors, determines probable causes and recommends solutions up to and including product reformulation, modification to SOPs, requalification of equipment or other appropriate actions.
  • Prepare deviation assessments for problem batches or calibration of manufacturing equipment. The incumbent consults with Quality Services and/or operations staff to determine appropriate corrective actions needed during the manufacturing process and documents these decisions, following up with engineering, regulatory affairs, compliance and/or research staff as needed.
  • Support projects targeting reduction of shrink, scrap or obsolescence, investigating manufacturing or packaging problems, testing potential causes and recommending corrective actions as appropriate.

Experience Required

  • At least one of the following educational and experience requirements must be met in order to qualify:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering or closely allied life sciences discipline combined with 5 to 11 years of research experience within the pharmaceutical industry
  • Master’s degree combined with 2 to 9 years of relevant research experience
  • Doctoral degree combined with up to 1 to 7 years of relevant research experience.
  • Knowledge of the principals and practices of pharmaceutical sciences combined with professional experience in developing and testing formulation processes in more than one dosage form or product category.
  • Expert in writing parts of ANDA submission relevant to the formulation / process development.
  • Sound problem solving skills and good scientific judgment are required.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work on interdisciplinary teams are required.
  • Hands on small scale equipment and good understanding of large scale conventional pharmaceutical equipment is required.
  • Familiarity with project management methodology is necessary.
