Description:

ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Department of Public Works is a 270-person department committed to providing dependable, high-quality services; developing a safe, healthy, livable environment; supporting and developing the work force; engaging the community and providing excellent customer service; and planning for a sustainable future. The Safety Specialist reports to the Assistant Commissioner of Administration & Planning through the Safety Officer. The Safety Specialist will work with the Safety Officer to develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure a safe and healthy workplace for employees. The Safety Specialist will also assist with the implementation of workplace safety programs with a particular focus on employees in safety-sensitive positions of the operational departments including Public Works, Water, and Traffic.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in identifying and analyzing workplace and operational hazards.
  • Develop recommendations to reduce risk for employees and operations.
  • Conduct safety audits of operations and follow up with staff to ensure safety measures are being consistently implemented.
  • Deliver training to staff to support improved safety practices.
  • Assist in responding to crashes and injuries in the city; collect and report on crash and injury data; and participate in on-site investigations.
  • Assist in emergency situations as required including, but not limited to, significant inclement weather events and participate in a 24 hour a day on call rotation.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience:

  • Three (3) years of professional experience in industrial safety and training programs, including at least one (1) year of experience directly providing training.
  • Massachusetts Class D license.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to provide clear presentations and trainings.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Strong writing and editing skills and ability to present information succinctly.
  • Ability to assess and analyze safety situations effectively and efficiently.
  • Proficiency with a variety of computer software typical to professional office environment including word and excel.
  • High ethical standards and personal integrity.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in physical sciences, workplace safety, industrial hygiene, or a field related to the work.
  • Knowledge of and experience with health and safety standards as they relate to municipal operations of Public Works, Water, Electrical and Traffic.
  • OSHA certification and experience with OSHA regulations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work involves frequent site visits, requiring travel to and through construction zones, driving, walking, bending, squatting, reaching and stretching. Ability to access, input and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to operate office equipment including copiers, printers and scanners. Executes multiple tasks involving keyboarding, telephones, writing, bending, reaching and lifting boxes of files (up to 10 lbs.).

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Outdoors including construction sites and congested City roadways under all weather conditions. Standard office environment, which includes fluorescent lighting and air conditioning. Busy office work environment characterized by multiple work demands from staff and customer interaction. This position may be eligible for limited hybrid work under the City’s Telework Policy depending on operational needs.
