Job Description:

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting an Associate Director of Animal Resources (AR). The Associate Director will assist the Senior Director in providing leadership and oversight for animal welfare compliance, including veterinary care and preventive medicine programs. In collaboration with the Senior Director, they will be responsible for ensuring compliance with regulations (USDA, NIH, NSF, etc.) governing animal use in UNRs research and education programs. The Associate Director will serve as the acting Director in their absence.

Additional responsibilities will include acting as the backup institutional contact for Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC), assisting with document preparation, and participating in site visits for re-accreditation. The Associate Director will supervise AR staff, assist with budget and fiscal accountability, and collaborate on grant-funded independent study areas related to campus animal use programs.

The Associate Director will serve as an expert in traditional laboratory animals, wildlife, ruminants, and swine and will be an instrumental part in establishing scientific collaborations across campus. The Associate Director will serve as a voting member on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). This position reports to the Senior Director of Animal Resources.

Required Qualifications

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M./V.M.D.) Degree or a D.V.M./V.M.D. from a foreign institution and an Education Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduate Certificate issued by the AVMA, which certifies the holder meets the educational prerequisites for licensure and five (5) years of professional experience.

Related Experience:

Management of a multi-species laboratory animal care and use program that utilizes traditional and non-traditional laboratory animals. Demonstrated experience in collaborating with funded researchers.

Certification and Licensure:

  • National Board Certification, by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) upon employment or ability to obtain certification, within three years of hire.

  • Nevada Veterinary Practitioners License upon employment or within one year of date of hire.

  • USDA/APHIS/VS accreditation under Category II of the National Veterinary Accreditation Program upon employment or within one year of date of hire.

  • Controlled Substance Registration Certificate from the Drug Enforcement Administration of the US Department of Justice, and licensure by the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy Controlled Substance upon employment or one year of date of hire.

Schedule or Travel Requirements

  • Occasional overnight travel for conferences and to perform IACUC site visits at remote locations of Nevada Agricultural Experiment Stations
