Center for Performing Arts

at Governors State University seeks teaching artists with childcare experience and a specialty in one or more of the following areas: theatre, vocal music, and/or dance, to serve as Assistant Teaching Artists for the

Center's Summer Musical Theatre Camp
.



WORK SCHEDULE:

Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 3:15pm for camp teaching artists. (with the possibility of also working later in the evening for camp after-care and final shows.)
Session #1: June 10 - 14, 2024, with a final show on June 14 at 7pm
Session #2: June 17 - 28, 2024 (no camp June 19), with a final show on June 28 at 7pm

This is a temporary assignment that will end at the discretion of the department or when funding or hours are exhausted.




COMPENSATION: $15-20/hour, based on experience.

Essential Responsibilities


TEACHING ARTIST duties include:


  • Working under the guidance the Camp Directors, devise a short script inspired by Shrek the musical and camper suggestions, and then stage the script with a small group of campers.

  • Directing campers in the rehearsal of scripted scenes for Shrek and Annie KIDS.

  • Providing creative support and suggestions for campers on songs and choreography.

  • Providing accurate program information, technical needs, supply needs, and other communications as needed to Camp Directors.

  • Assisting during full ensemble rehearsals.

  • Assisting backstage/onstage during technical rehearsals and performance.


  • Other duties may include:


  • Leading a group of campers and providing support to them throughout the day.

  • Supervising lunch, recess, and day-to-day camper activities.

  • Instructing campers on expectations and assisting campers with maintaining clean spaces, including theater, bathrooms, green room, and lobby.

  • Assisting with daily parent/guardian drop-off and pick-up.

  • Managing classroom behavior for assigned campers.

  • Assisting before, during, and after the final performance.
  • Required and Preferred Qualifications


    QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Previous experience working with children ages 7-15

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Arts experience in at least one of the following areas: theatre, acting, vocal music, dance, improvisation, scriptwriting.

  • Must pass a background check.

  • Ability to play piano and/or read sheet music is helpful.
