Description: Position Description

The Application Developer is a member of the Computing team at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and works as part of a team that designs, develops, and maintains web-based applications that support the teaching, research, and administrative mission of SEAS.

Job Specific Responsibilities:

The primary focus of the Application Developer is writing, debugging, and reviewing code in collaboration with the other members of the development team. Additional responsibilities include attending meetings with users to determine needs and requirements, researching solutions to meet those requirements, and assisting with the deployment and maintenance of applications. Each developer on the team is also responsible for documenting and testing their work so that our applications can be effectively supported for the future. In some cases, individual developers will also be responsible for conducting training with end users to ensure familiarity with the systems.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience building full-stack web applications for a variety of audiences.
  • Strong HTML and CSS knowledge.
  • At least one year's experience writing advanced JavaScript/Typescript.
  • At least one year's experience working with front-end application frameworks, such as Angular, React or Vue.
  • At least one years' experience with server-side technologies, such as NestJS, Express, Django/Flask, or Ruby on Rails.
  • Experience working with distributed version control systems, e.g. git,
  • Experience working with relational or object databases, such as PostgreSQL or MongoDB.
  • Experience working with Unix/Linux command-line interfaces.
  • Experience analyzing, troubleshooting and debugging software applications.
  • A commitment to following web standards and best practices.
  • Familiarity with WCAG 2.1 AA standards for web accessibility.
  • Familiarity with industry best practices for information security and data privacy.
  • Experience working within Agile projects.
  • Comfort working independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality and accurate work in a fast-paced environment.
  • An interest in continuous learning and willingness to research and learn new technologies.
  • An interest in teaching others new things in the spirit of collaboration.
  • Ability to adapt to the rapidly changing technologies inherent in web development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • This position will be based in Allston, MA. The department is currently operating with a hybrid workplace model.
