The Assistant Director, University Compliance will work to ensure that the University’s compliance efforts are consistent with applicable Federal, State, and Local laws/regulations. The position will assist the Chief Internal Auditor and University Compliance Officer in maintaining, managing, administering, and continually improving the University Compliance program. The position reports to the Chief Internal Auditor and University Compliance Officer who, in turn, reports to the University’s Vice President and General Counsel.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Foster open communication, establish effective working relationships, and build credibility with members of the University community to promote a culture of ethics and compliance and to instill a sense of shared accountability for compliance.
  • Serve as a trusted resource for compliance-related information, guidance, and support; advise and educate compliance partners throughout the University and serve as a catalyst for the achievement of best practices in all compliance subject matter areas.
  • Perform and oversee the performance of compliance-related monitoring activities to determine if University-wide compliance efforts are in alignment with applicable policies, procedures, laws/regulations; provide constructive feedback on, and recommendations and guidance for improving compliance efforts.
  • Regularly assess existing compliance and ethics-related University training/education efforts and identify any additional training/education needs.
  • Design/develop and facilitate compliance and ethics training/education sessions and educational materials for faculty and staff, and periodically analyze and refresh compliance and ethics-related training and education materials.
  • Develop and lead a communication strategy to promote compliance and ethics awareness.
  • Lead and/or participate in various University committees and ad-hoc working groups related to compliance and ethics matters.
  • Maintain a working understanding of the higher education compliance landscape and stay abreast of changes in federal, state, and local regulations that impact institutions of higher education; and develop recommendations and partner with University management/leadership to timely address required changes to University policies and training and education programs.
  • Communicate proactively and regularly with the Chief Internal Auditor and University Compliance Officer regarding compliance program matters and significant risks.
  • Partner with the Chief Internal Auditor and University Compliance Officer to monitor the management of active compliance issues and engage with responsible units to ensure timely implementation of appropriate corrective/disciplinary actions in response to any detected compliance issue(s).
  • Prepare time-sensitive written reports and resources on compliance and ethics topics.
  • Assist with evaluation and management of conflict-of-interest disclosures and mitigation processes.
  • Serve as backup for and support to other Compliance team roles.
  • Performs other related duties as required or directed by the Chief Internal Auditor and University Compliance Officer.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s or Master’s degree in pertinent area plus four (4) years of progressive compliance-related experience within a complex institutional environment
  • current/valid compliance certification (e.g., CCEP, CHC)
  • demonstrated knowledge and understanding of emerging trends and regulatory requirements affecting institutions of higher education or similarly complex organization, including Federal Sentencing Guidelines, environmental health and safety, FERPA, Title IX, Clery Act, ADA, employment and hiring compliance, federal and state privacy issues, and financial aid
  • ability to formulate broad policy recommendations for the organization, demonstrated ability in creating effective and comprehensive policies and with assisting managers/leaders with writing and amending policies and guidance documentation
  • demonstrated history of self-motivation, initiative, and strong time management skills to manage multiple projects and priorities within established timelines
  • demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • strong analytical and creative thinking skills
  • demonstrated success in partnering with cross-functional management/leadership in resolving concerns, remediating issues, or making improvements in an effective manner
  • exceptional writing and interpersonal communication skills; and demonstrated experience in developing training/education materials and facilitating training and education sessions.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • J.D., Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration or Master of Legal Studies / Higher Education Compliance, or pertinent compliance-related field.
  • Knowledge regarding compliance in higher education, sponsored research compliance, export controls, and research security will be carefully considered.
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
  • Tools, machinery and equipment used: Computer, printer, photocopier and fax machines.
  • Office environment.
