Job Description:

Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties has a full-time opportunity for a Lead Medical Assistant in Westminster, CA.

Schedule: 4/10 work week which includes one weekend day.

Intermediate level position responsible for all supporting functions in the delivery of reproductive health care, primary care and/or surgical services.  Assist patients by providing testing, screening, and assisting patients both pre and post-surgical procedures which is required for the provision of medical reproductive health care. Works alongside providers to ensure high quality, efficient delivery of care. Ability to triage patients, prepare exam rooms and assist the providers before, during, and after all medical procedures including surgical abortion services up to 23.6 weeks. Provides non-judgmental, empathetic care for patients.

Provides training, acceptance, encouragement and moral support to new incoming medical assistants. Conducts shadowing and evaluation for new and existing medical assistants.  Assists health center management to facilitate patient flow and coordinates flow facilitation in the absence of health center management.  Supports rollouts of new policies, processes, and procedures in the health center.  In partnership with health center management, disseminates information to medical assistants in the health center.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:  Essential functions encompass the required tasks, duties and responsibilities performed as part of the job and the reason the job exists.


  • Adhere to agency’s policies, procedures and protocols. This may include successfully completing agency, regional, and/or state certification requirements.

  • Coordinate and manage the health center patient flow in the absence of management.

  • Independently perform and/or coordinate the following back-office functions.

    • Handle difficult counseling situations with clients on such subjects as rape, STIs, and late abortions.

    • Perform basic lab work (Hgb, pregnancy tests, urine dipsticks).

    • Process specimens for outside lab test.

    • Obtain vital signs (blood pressure, height, weight, etc.)

    • Clean and sterilize equipment, stock exam rooms.

    • Assist licensed staff, as needed.

    • MA only patient visits and offer and review written information on pregnancy options.

    • Obtain medical history.

    • Provide information and instruction on abortion to patients, makes appointments or referrals for follow-up medical services.



  • Independently perform and/or coordinate the following surgical center back office functions

    • Perform a variety of tasks in the laboratory including but not limited to analyzing products of conception checks up to 24 weeks, testing and screening for Hgb, and pregnancy, package specimens for outside lab testing, record lab results, and triage abnormal results

    • Prepare and stock exam/procedure rooms including cleaning and sterilize equipment

    • Assist physician during procedures providing ultrasound guidance and assistance for Laminaria and Digoxin administration to patients up to 24 weeks.

    • Provide patient care by: Pre-procedure: connecting to EKG, B/P, pulse oximeter; Post-procedure: transporting to recovery room, wiping and cleaning bodily fluids, and translating medical providers instructions ensuring the patient understands post procedure care.

    • Effectively interview and handle difficult situations including the subjects of rape, STIs, and late abortions, while ensuring informed consent.

    • Provide information to patients on the provision of medical reproductive health care including, contraceptives, emergency contraception, abortions to patients up to 24 weeks.



  • Comply with infection control, safety, and emergency guidelines.

  • Schedule appointments for and assist/support the clinical staff in family planning including but not limited to contraceptives and abortion services.

  • Work to ensure client satisfaction. Establish rapport with clients, remaining cognizant of and responsive to needs for medical and educational care delivered in a professional, expedient manner.

  • Prepare center for opening and secure for closing, as required.

  • Administrative Duties:

    • Complete and maintain weekly progress assessment, performance checklist and other documentation use for training staff

    • Periodic check-ins with Senior Training Instructor/Training Manager

    • Attend and participate in all webinars

    • Contribute to new medical assistants’ orientation review

    • Assist with rollouts of new policies and procedures related to medical assistant functions

    • Track, collect, and/or report completion of privileging documentation for new medical assistants to Patient Services Admin.



  • Instruct:

    • Trains, shadows, and/or evaluates new and existing medical assistants for all services within their health center in partnership with the Patient Services training team.

    • Evaluate and documents learner performance and comprehension of course materials (i.e. learning plans). Identifies learning obstacles and work with Health Center Management to develop an action plan for resolution

    • Serves as a resource and subject matter expert in their health center as a medical assistant for all services within their health center.

    • Ensure staff is aware of changes and weekly updates that impact the medical assistants

    • Assist during the Patient Services Annual Training’s medical assistant session



  • Peer Coaching:

    • Provide feedback for the 3-month review of newly hired and trained medical assisants to health center management

    • Pass on knowledge, confirms the value of the training experience

    • Provides just-in time help and insight

    • Acts as an experienced role model

    • Provides acceptance, encouragement, and moral support

    • Challenges and encourages appropriately to facilitate growth

    • Enjoys the opportunity to pass on their wisdom and knowledge and collaboration skills

    • Effective communication skills that facilitated the growth of new medical assistants and existing medical assistants

    • Foster increased self-direction and self-responsibility



 

Non-Essential Functions:


  • Keep current on relevant anatomy and physiology, methods of contraception, STIs, pregnancy, adoption, early prenatal care, education techniques, community resources, agency protocols, referral procedures, and all Planned Parenthood programs.

  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by health center management. These may include occasionally needed specialized services such as services for developmentally disabled clients and specialized patient education programs.

Qualifications

Licensure and/or Certification Requirements:


  • Medical Assistant’s Certificate from an accredited school required.

Minimum Education:


  • High school diploma or General Educational Development “GED” preferred.

Minimum Work Experience:


  • Experience in clinical setting preferred.

  • Reproductive, managed/primary health care and/or abortion services experience desireable.

Language Requirements/Preference:


  • Some positions require bilingual skills (reading, writing, and speaking). If required, candidate will be tested for proficiency prior to offer.

Other requirements:


  • Must possess any applicable certifications (CMA, Venipuncture, CPR), as required by Agency.

  • Must be in good standing with the organization and not have any written corrective actions or performance coaching in the last 6 months.
