Job Description:

The Research Specialist will be responsible for maintaining the laboratory and performing research related activities within the University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics. This position will provide support by performing administrative duties related to ordering lab supplies, maintenance and organization of protocols and documents, remaining in compliance with various standard operating procedures and requirements, and conducting neuroscience research related to gene discovery in rare inherited hematological and neurological disorders, performing functional modeling of disease using molecular experiments involving induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and gene editing technologies, coordinating patient recruitment, maintaining rare disease biorepository and registry, collecting and organizing data, and analyzing results.

This position will promote the University's research mission by supporting scientific, scholarly and creative activities through scientific inquiry, open discovery, dissemination of new knowledge, administering programs, procedures and policies to assure compliance and to advance research.

The Research Specialist will assist in the development and implementation of investigate procedures to accomplish research goals. Review literature and recommend experiments directed toward furthering a specific research project or multiple projects. Independently perform scientific investigative procedures. Analyze and interpret experimental results and assist in determining relevance to project. Prepare reports, charts, and graphs directed at communicating results at scientific meetings or in preparing manuscripts for publication. Actively contribute to the research results of the laboratory. This is a specified term position.


We intend to hire for one position at either the Research Associate, requisition #24002445, or Research Assistant, requisition #24001754, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate.


Duties to include:

  • Function as a specialist/technical expert in a specific discipline(s).
  • Investigate and perform critical analysis of current literature to develop novel approaches in conjunction with the principal investigator.
  • Conduct complex experiments in specialized research discipline.
  • Contribute at a high level to the lab/research project as evidenced by documented recognition in publications as an author or for technical assistance.
  • Perform complex statistical analysis of data using advanced statistical methods and tools.
  • Oversee many of the administrative functions, including but not limited to writing and amending protocols, making decisions regarding the acquisition of equipment and supplies, being responsible for the safety program, and managing staff.
  • May train and direct the work of other laboratory personnel with respect to proper laboratory techniques, the use of laboratory equipment, and safety procedures.

About the Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics


The Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics is committed to excellence in providing comprehensive services for children, adults and prenatal patients in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of genetic conditions. The Division's multidisciplinary team is comprised of board-certified medical geneticists, a molecular genetic pathologist, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, genetic counselors, nurses, and dietitians. Our clinics include General Genetics Clinics, Metabolic Genetics Clinics, Connective Tissue Disorder Clinics, Neurofibromatosis Clinics and Outreach Genetics Clinics. Genetic diseases and disorders affect families as well as individuals. The medical team provides the information, support and follow-up needed to make informed decisions. Education Requirements:

  • Master's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of related work experience and education.

Experience Requirements:

  • Three to five years of related work experience
  • Ability to critically review information. Understands new concepts with minimal assistance.
  • Ability to utilize existing resources and learning to achieve or exceed desired outcomes of current and future organizational goals/needs. Able to demonstrate ethical behavior in diverse situations while producing results.
  • Ability to meet or exceed customer service needs and expectations and provide excellent service in a direct or indirect manner. Ability to effectively transmit and interpret information through appropriate communication with internal and external customers.

Highly Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of formal methodologies, tools and techniques for conducting research, studies and tests.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to locate, interpret and evaluate research findings compiled and documented by others and use this material to support empirical research.
  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize tools and techniques for producing well- written, meaningful and usable documentation of research findings.
  • Knowledge of practices, behaviors, applicable laws, rules, and regulations governing proper research conduct; ability to demonstrate ethical and compliant behavior in diverse situations.
  • Knowledge of the procedures and programs in place in the organization to ensure employee, student and subject safety (occupational safety, fire, patient, animal, drug, radiation, environmental safety and emergency plans); ability to train others; ability to take appropriate actions in case of emergency.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to develop novel or innovative techniques to address research problems.
  • Ability to review goals, analyze processes necessary to achieve those goals, and develop techniques and systems required to meet those goals.
  • With assistance write and prepare reports about research projects to present at scientific meetings.
  • Able to write first draft manuscripts.
  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
