Role summary:

This person will report directly to the U.S. Controller. The Senior Manager of Tax will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of tax planning, compliance, and reporting for NOVONIX. This leadership position requires a seasoned tax professional with a deep understanding of tax laws and regulations, strong analytical skills, and a strategic mindset. The successful candidate will ensure regulatory compliance and optimize tax strategies to minimize liabilities while maximizing financial performance. In the role of Senior Manager of Tax, you will be joining a world-class Finance team that delivers innovative solutions to tough problems.

Ideally, this person will work onsite at our Chattanooga, TN-USA or Halifax, Nova Scotia-CAN office.

Responsibilities include:
  • Tax Strategy: Together with outside professionals, develop and execute comprehensive tax strategies to optimize the organization's tax position, mitigate risks, and minimize tax liabilities.
  • Tax Compliance: Oversee the preparation and submission of all tax returns globally (direct and indirect taxes), ensuring they are accurate, timely, and compliant with relevant tax laws and regulations.
  • Tax Planning: Identify opportunities for tax savings and efficiency, including credits, deductions, and incentives, and work with internal and external stakeholders to implement tax planning initiatives.
  • Team Leadership: Provide guidance and support to ensure the department's success.
  • Financial Reporting: Collaborate with the Finance and Accounting teams to ensure that tax implications are accurately reflected in financial statements and reports, including preparation of tax effect accounting calculations.
  • Audit and Examination: Manage tax audits, examinations, and inquiries, including communication and negotiation with tax authorities, to resolve issues and disputes.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay up to date with changes in tax laws and regulations, ensuring the organization's compliance and advising on the potential impact of regulatory changes.
  • Transfer Pricing: Together with outside professionals, develop and maintain a transfer pricing policy in accordance with international guidelines, ensuring compliance and minimizing associated risks.
  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate potential tax risks and implement controls and procedures to maintain compliance.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Effectively communicate tax strategies, issues, and opportunities to senior management, providing recommendations and information needed for decision-making.
  • Other duties as assigned.

You are/have:
  • A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • A Chartered Accountant (CA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with an emphasis on taxation.
  • Excellent command of FASB ASC 740 - Income Taxes and proficiency with complex annual/quarterly income tax provisions and information for SEC financial statement filings.
  • The ability to develop and manage tax related SOX narratives and internal control processes.
  • Experience with state and local income and indirect (sales/use) taxes and are skilled with taxable nexus analyses, determinations, and proper tax registrations.
  • High competence in writing tax related documentation and conclusions to support critical tax related positions.
  • A minimum of 8+ years of progressive experience in tax planning, compliance, and management with a strong understanding of local and international tax laws and regulations.
  • Broad technical knowledge of U.S. and international tax law and regulations.
  • Experience in cross-border tax structuring
  • Sound understanding of the tax implications of a global, publicly traded company.
  • Experience in the energy or manufacturing industry (highly desirable).
  • Proven leadership and team management skills with a track record of successfully leading tax teams.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities, as well as strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively convey complex tax matters to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency with tax software, financial systems, and tax research tools.

Extra awesome if you also have:
  • A master's degree in taxation (highly desirable).
  • Experience with Avalara Tax software.
