Our Opportunity

FFI Ionix are seeking a highly motivated professional with proton exchange membrane (PEM) fabrication and processing experience to join our technology and product development team. The candidate for this position will have a clear understanding of the fundamental principles of design criteria that will lead to a high performing and new generations of ion exchange membranes for water electrolysis. The research will be conducted in the context of a multidisciplinary team in polymer dispersion chemistry, composite/hybrid material production, materials characterization and electrochemical testing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop durable PEM products for water electrolysis.
  • Work with a global and diverse team of scientists and engineers seeking to advance the scientific understanding of Ion exchange membrane chemistry and transform such understandings into a real-world use in product development.
  • Develop research strategies and deeper understanding of the effect of chemical modifications of the ionomers and additive chemistry on membrane and electrode performance and durability.
  • Plan and execute a wide range of testing protocols, including performance, reliability and durability of membrane and electrode in water electrolysis setup.
  • Support manufacturing with membrane scale-up process and techno-economic analyses.
  • Train group technicians, student interns, or visiting collaborators/partners.
  • Present and report research results in a timely manner.
  • File inventions on new membranes/materials chemistry and assist in review and monitoring of patent and scientific literature relating to our technology.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Advanced degree in Materials Science, Polymer Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, (or Related field) preferred
  • 3+ years of professional experience preferred
  • Experience in PEM membrane formulation and fabrication preferred
  • Experience in additive and composite membrane chemistry preferred
  • Experience in electrochemical processes such as in fuel cells, flow battery is a plus
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Must be a team player and passionate about renewable energy and sustainability
  • Extensive experience facilitating industry engagement in research and expanding the technology readiness level
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international, scientific audience
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research and product development environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needs
  • Other duties as assigned
