Advertised Job Summary:

The University of South Carolina College of Nursing is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the full-time program director for the Nurse-Midwifery program and College of Nursing faculty position. The position is onsite in Columbia, SC. In addition, teaching, scholarship, and practice are expected. The Nurse-Midwifery Program Director reports to the Department Chair, Advanced Professional Nursing Practice & Leadership, for programmatic duties and responsibilities and oversees the Nurse-Midwifery Program. Faculty appointment and salary are commensurate with the candidate's teaching, leadership, and scholarship experience.



Responsibilities:




  • Provide visionary leadership about the direction of the Nurse-Midwifery program, overseeing the program's day-to-day operations.

  • Serves as a resource and leader to faculty and students within the program.

  • Serves as a leader in recruitment and retention efforts, providing expertise of program knowledge.

  • Serves on the admission review committee for students applying to the program.

  • Participates in the planning, implementing, and evaluating of new student orientation.

  • Work with Student Affairs Coordinators to ensure appropriate academic advising, development, and implementation of individualized programs of study, progression, and graduation.

  • Monitor national trends and standards for specialty area practice and practice guidelines, relating these to curriculum and ensuring that the curriculum and procedures are aligned with these standards. Communicate changes and trends with the CON faculty and Executive Associate Dean for Academics and Accreditation.

  • Ensure program compliance with college, university, American Association of Colleges of Nursing's (AACN) Essentials, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), South Carolina Board of Nursing, or other professional organization standards as appropriate for the specialty.

  • Work closely with the Clinical Placement Coordinator, Director of Clinical Partnerships, and Nurse-Midwifery students to establish and maintain clinical placement sites.

  • Collaborate with and advise the appropriate academic council with curriculum needs and planning in response to national standards and guidelines for specialty area practice and practice guidelines, including course content, course sequencing, and evaluation methods. Communicate changes and trends with the CON faculty.

  • Provide preceptors with orientation materials and contact information.

  • Utilize national guidelines and practices to evaluate clinical sites and preceptors, obtain preceptor clinical data (license, resume, etc.), preceptor evaluation of students, student logs, and surveys. Submit summary data to the Executive Associate Dean for Academics and Accreditation.

  • Monitor and track Nurse-Midwifery student progression and attrition; Develop strategies to promote retention and graduation. Provide input as requested regarding decisions that affect the student's progression.

  • Monitor outcomes (e.g., certification pass rates, course evaluations, program assessments) to determine achievement of program objectives.

  • Participate in the review of quality outcome assessment and revisions as necessary.

  • Collaborate with the Executive Associate Dean for Academics & Accreditation with any program or curricular revisions, new course(s), and teaching methodologies.

  • Assist the Executive Associate Dean for Academics & Accreditation with program reporting, program reviews/accreditation, and overall evaluation data/needs of the program.

  • Maintain active APRN licensure, national certification, clinical practice and competency in Nurse-Midwifery.

  • Maintain own faculty responsibilities/activities according to faculty status and rank.

  • Participate in appropriate professional organizations/meetings.


Required Education and Experience:

Earned doctorate in nursing (preferred) or a related field (e.g., PhD, EdD, or other), active clinical practice as a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), current national certification as a CNM, and eligibility for advanced practice licensure in South Carolina. Experience with academic teaching in midwifery or advanced practice nursing and history of leadership positions. Demonstrates evidence of knowledge of national guidelines and standards that guide the CNM program. Evidence of an understanding of university policies and procedures for education.


Preferred Qualifications:

The ability to think creatively and strategically, strong communication and interpersonal skills, experience in mentorship, experience in academic/clinical partnerships, and participation in leadership roles in midwifery, nursing, or related professional fields locally, regionally, and nationally.
