Advertised Job Summary:

The African American Studies Program is excited to invite applications for an interdisciplinary postdoctoral teaching fellowship in Race, Freedom, and Democratic Citizenship at the University of South Carolina. The main focus of these postdoctoral fellowships is on teaching courses in our program that meet the aims of a new state mandate to offer instruction on the United States' founding documents, including the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Federalist Papers, and the Emancipation Proclamation. The African American Studies program aims to supplement this mandate with a robust exploration of the evolving definitions of freedom in the United States through an analysis of the lives and writings of African Americans who have struggled to realize the country's founding principles and core values. In considering how the provisions of these documents impact the everyday lives of Black citizens from the seventeenth-century to the present, we welcome interdisciplinary perspectives and modes of inquiry that range from history and political science to rhetoric, art, film and media studies, music, literature, gender studies, philosophy, anthropology, psychology, sociology, environmental studies, health sciences, economics, and more. Postdoctoral fellows will also be given some flexibility to pursue their own research agenda, to collaborate with other scholars in African American Studies, and to contribute to the intellectual life of the university through colloquia and at least one public talk. This Founding Documents Post-Doc is available beginning on August 1, 2023.

This twelve-month position includes a five-course teaching load (two in the Fall; two in the Spring, and one either in the Winter term or over Summer session). Fellows will be required to take part in professional and intellectual development activities with a cross-campus cohort of other founding documents instructors. The fellows will receive a yearly $3,000 research/travel fund along with office space in the Department of African American Studies.
