Position Summary:

The Global Health Post-Baccalaureate Fellow works in the development of low-cost healthcare technologies designed by Rice360 and is primarily responsible for supporting research by conducting basic research and prototype development, collecting data, performing basic statistical analysis, proofreading and editing published written work, and drafting abstracts, articles, reports, and other publications. In addition, they assist in project management responsibilities and ensure comprehensive documentation for project longevity. Together with the Director of Technology Development, the Global Health Post-Baccalaureate Fellow will assist in developing new technologies and will interact extensively with clinicians and other external stakeholders for the implementation and improvement of Rice360 products.

Location: Houston, TX

Workplace Requirements

This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in-person at the Cambridge Office Building, Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.

Annual Hiring Range : $42,500 to $45,000

Minimum Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or physical sciences

    • In lieu of the education/experience requirement, additional related education and/or experience, above and beyond what is required, may be substituted on an equivalent year-for-year basis.

  • 1 year of related experience

    • In lieu of the education/experience requirement, additional related education and/or experience, above and beyond what is required, may be substituted on an equivalent year-for-year basis.



Skills:

  • Knowledge of software statistical packages such as Stata, SAS, R, or HLM
  • Good analytical and research skills
  • Ability to build reports
  • Good verbal and written communications skills including proofreading
  • Good presentation skills


Preferences:

  • Bachelor's Degree in bioengineering/biomedical engineering
  • One year of related experience (can be gained during education or internship) in developing biomedical engineering technologies and/or in the healthcare field
  • Experience working in low-resource settings or with non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
  • Knowledge of global health challenges and best practices
  • Knowledge of software statistical packages such as Stata, SAS, R, or HLM
  • Knowledge of CAD and related software such as SolidWorks or Fusion360


Essential Functions:

  • Participates in the design, planning and implementation of research projects and data analysis
  • Identifies, locates and obtains data / information
  • Utilizes statistical software to quantify data
  • Builds automated reporting solutions
  • Manipulates and cleans-up data
  • Completes data entry and analysis
  • Reports research findings
  • Ensures information presented is valid and accurate
  • Develops presentations and reports
  • Performs all other duties as assigned


Additional Functions

  • Designs and develops affordable, high performance clinical technologies for sustainable use in low-resource settings
  • Engages in rapid-prototyping and design iteration to improve upon existing technology
  • Considers human factors, usability, design for manufacture, and relevant regulatory standards
  • Employs project management best practices and maintains comprehensive documentation to progress technology development, manage deadlines, and reach project milestones
  • Collects data and performs data analysis to inform project decisions and aid in reporting
  • Reports research findings through formal and informal communication of technical results via presentations and reports to project teams and organization leaders
  • Works with external partners to advance technologies towards commercialization
  • Contributes to Rice360 education ecosystem through undergraduate mentorship and promotion of Rice360 programs
