Job Description:

Museum of the Rockies (MOR) seeks a creative and experienced fundraiser to be its next Director of Development and Membership. The Director of Development and Membership manages the department's programs and its staff, sets financial goals, is responsible for large donor cultivation, and directs or supports campaigns and appeals. The Director is a critical member of the museum's leadership team and will need to bring to the position an in-depth understanding of fundraising, membership, and events. The Director will be responsible for helping to hire key positions and expand the department to meet the growing needs of the museum and its exciting future.

Annual Letter of Appointment and Starting pay is $97,000 annually, commensurate with experience, education, and qualification


Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills - Please do not apply if you do not have these five qualifications.

  1. Bachelor Degree
  2. Five years of experience in increasingly responsible development positions with evidence of helping to build strong fundraising programs.
  3. Familiarity with areas of development, including capital campaigns, major and planned giving, digital/direct mail, membership, foundation and corporate fundraising, grant writing, event planning, prospect research and stewardship;
  4. Demonstrated experience with database systems and strong fiscal knowledge and data-analysis capability.
  5. Substantial experience related to nonprofit organizations.
Membership
  • Direct a large and complex membership program to ensure that membership in the museum continues to grow and engage a diverse segment of the museum's local, state, and national community.
  • Oversee membership calendar of events and acquisition to strengthen participation, expand households, and foster a logical path of members transitioning to donors.
  • Implement with staff the Annual Museum Members Meeting.
  • Ensure that the museum fulfills its many member benefits.
  • Support the Executive Director in communicating and engaging members.
Management
  • Direct the Development and Membership team, setting clear financials goals and strategies that meet the museum's annual budgetary needs and that support its strategic plan and long-range objectives.
  • Conduct ongoing evaluation of the Development and Membership Department's strengths, weaknesses, structure, and staffing.
  • Working with Development and Membership staff, create regular reports for the Executive Director, Board, and key committees that track progress towards goals.
  • Effectively manage and organize the department's day-to-day fundraising operations and budgets, using database and financial management systems to analyze progress against plans, to monitor expenses and cost-per-dollar-raised and to ensure security of all donor records taking into consideration cost/benefit, risk, mission fulfillment, logistics, and earned income projections, as appropriate.
  • Work closely with staff in administrative and programmatic areas to help identify and support short- and long-range financial opportunities and needs.

Leadership
  • Serve as a collegial and participatory member of the organization's executive team. Engage in strategic decision-making, short/long-term strategic planning, and development and implementation of organizational strategies, policies, and practices.
  • Foster an environment of cohesiveness and collaboration with colleagues across all museum departments; being conscientious of institutional deadlines, fostering strong communication, and striving for the general good of the organization.
  • Reflect positive professionalism and a warm, can-do spirit that attracts people to the museum and demonstrates a commitment to customer service at all levels.
