Overview

The Senior HR Generalist is responsible for fostering and maintaining client relationships, coaching for performance improvement, advising and negotiating in conflict situations, and assisting the Senior Manager in organizational effectiveness efforts. This role will deliver HR solutions in a number of key areas, such as employee and labor relations; performance management; organizational development; diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); and training and development. As a member of a cross-functional team within the Client Services Serivce POD, reporting to the Senior Manager of Client Services, this role will partner with other members of the HR team, and work collaboratively with all levels of management to administer HR policies, practices and procedures, and HR transactions as appropriate.



Responsibilities

  • Partners with Senior HR Manager in supporting cabinet areas/ or client groups Provides advice, guidance and decisions on HR matters to managers and staff.
  • Guides managers on performance management, labor relations matters, employee relations matters, reorganizations, and change management initiatives.
  • Ensures the consistent, uniform and fair application of University policies and procedures.
  • Identifies, researches, and analyzes employee and labor relations situations and recommends appropriate action to maintain a productive work environment.
  • Partners with the Senior HR Manager regarding complex employee cases, ensuring compliance with University policies and relevant government and state regulations.
  • Handles a variety of employee and labor relations investigations and independent drafting of investigative reports with general supervision from the Senior HR Manager.
  • Facilitates conflict resolution within client groups, as necessary.
  • Provides guidance to managers regarding disciplinary actions to ensure the consistent, uniform and fair application of University policies and procedures.
  • Works with Union leadership in a collaborative approach to resolve employee concerns, questions related to the application of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and development of new organizational processes that would impact represented employees.
  • Performs data analysis regarding critical issues/trends. Partners with Senior HR Manager and DEI colleagues in reviewing and addressing climate survey data.
  • Conducts employee exit interviews to identify transition trends.
  • Coordinates workforce and talent management efforts with clients relative to establishing solid promotion and reclassification rationales, collaborating with Compensation on hiring zones, offers, salary actions, audits and the annual merit increase process.
  • Collaborating with internal HR partners, assists clients with compensation and staffing needs; creates solutions to handle issues.
  • Mitigates risk by ensuring employment actions are in compliance with local, state and federal employment requirements.
  • Uses judgment in seeking advice from campus partners, such as Office of General Counsel, Risk Management, etc., as appropriate.
  • Stays current on recent federal, state and case law changes and monitors labor law updates and newsletters for changes that may affect HR.
  • Partners with University Learning and Development team to create and deliver solutions to managers and their departments. Align training solutions to organizational problems and priorities.
  • Conducts just-in-time training on HR practices for managers; coaching managers and supervisors; facilitates DDI curriculum.
  • Administers wide range of transaction processes/procedures to ensure proper processing of various HR transactions.
  • Participates in campus-wide strategic projects, committees and working groups; other duties as assigned. Partners with Client Services Team colleagues, internal HR Partners, and campus partners, as appropriate on projects and process improvements.



Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of experience as outlined below.
  • 5 to 7+ years of experience in a generalist role.
  • 5 to 7+ years of working in a Unionized environment supporting labor activities.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups and facilitate discussion.
  • Working knowledge of all HR functions, laws and practices, particularly employee relations; familiarity with organizational development and effectiveness and talent management is preferred as is the ability to understand and apply collective bargaining agreements for unionized staff
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology (i.e. MS Office, HRIS systems) to gather, interpret, organize, and present data.
  • Must possess sound judgment and critical thinking skills; ability to manage multiple priorities and administer.
