About the role:  

The Director of Planned Giving oversees the gift planning program for University of Puget Sound. The position is a leadership role responsible for developing and implementing strategies to promote charitable giving through estate planning vehicles, tangible personal property, and other types of philanthropic opportunities. In this role, you will oversee the strategic and day-to-day operations of the planned giving program, including prospect identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, and serves as an expert in the specialized areas of gift planning and leadership gifts. You will manage a portfolio of prospective and current planned gift donors and will drive opportunities to elevate and enhance the profile of a growing planned gift program.

University of Puget Sound offers a comprehensive compensation and benefit package. The anticipated annual base salary range for this position is $85,000 - $110,000.

Your day to day will likely include: 

  • Providing strategic vision and leadership contributing to the successful completion of key fundraising priorities; developing strategies and approaches to generate higher levels of giving in support of overall university fundraising initiatives.   
  • Serving as a central resource for planned giving information, offering ongoing consultation and guidance for colleagues and donors on planned, blended and complex gifts, including real estate, personal property, non-fiscal assets, and other vehicles.    
  • Developing and executing a comprehensive strategy to secure bequests, income gifts, non-fiscal assets, and other types of deferred gift commitments, blended gifts, and legacy gifts from alumni, parents and families, faculty, staff, and friends.   
  • Managing and direct initiatives that support and promote donor cultivation, acknowledgement, recognition, and stewardship through the Legacy Society; leading specialized donor cultivation and recognition activities in an effort to expand and encourage Legacy Society membership - working closely and in consultation with the Office of Donor Relations.   
  • Developing and executing a comprehensive marketing and communications plan for planned giving that complements constituent engagement, annual giving, and major gift fundraising activities and is consistent with university marketing and communications plans.   
  • Participating and assuming lead responsibilities for recommending tools and programs to generate benefactor interest and inquiries.  
  • Leading, recommending, developing, enhancing, and implementing procedures for the review, acceptance, and administration of deferred gifts; working closely and collaboratively with key stakeholder offices and colleagues to manage and track deferred gifts and realized bequests in a manner that maximizes efficiency.    
  • Developing, reviewing, and approving gift planning proposals, gift agreements, gift acknowledgements, and related documentation, ensuring appropriate compliance and consistency.   
  • Leading, facilitating, and managing partnerships with PGCalc, State Street Global Bank, executors, attorneys, university counsel, and related constituents to enable gift closure and stewardship.  
  • Participating in professional development organizations, maintaining currency in best practices and trends in major and planned giving, and facilitating regular training and development opportunities for staff on basics and emerging trends in gift planning.  
  • Serving as an active member of the University Relations team through regular participation in campus activities and events.   
  • Overseeing the administration of the planned giving program, supervising and directing the administrative support functions that are held by the Capital and Planning Giving Office Manager.   

 

What we would like to see from you: 

  • A bachelor’s degree, and while not required, advanced degree and/or planned giving certification.  
  • Significant experience in development or constituent relations, preferably in a higher education, non-profit setting. 
  • A strong track record of gift planning and major gifts experience or relevant experience in financial planning, wealth management, estate planning, or legal background. 
  • Genuine affinity for the liberal arts and mission of University of Puget Sound – and able to learn and articulate the University’s priorities to meet fundraising goals.   
  • A commitment to representing the university in an ethical manner and maintaining confidentiality along with discretion, in navigating sensitive situations. 
  • Highly developed computer skills as well as experience with constituent relations software, PGCalc or similar planned gift applications, and communication/marketing platforms.
