Externs are employed by Tower Health and will be expected to be at work when assigned. This is not only a student experience; it is a paid position for 8 weeks with the opportunity to continue to work during the school year/breaks.
Enhance skill acquisition through ongoing training and validation
The extern will be a vital part of the healthcare team and is expected to perform as a partner with the nurse to give primary nursing care to their assigned patients.
Arrive to the unit at the scheduled time and work through the entire shift.
Build on experiences to continue learning and advance skills.
Complete an exit interview, and complete an evaluation of their experience and preceptors.

Overview
An eight-week Student Nurse Externship designed for the student who is currently enrolled in Reading Hospital School of Health Sciences-Nursing Program and is interested in gaining valuable clinical experience and the opportunity to enhance previously learned skills while working under the guidance of an experienced registered nurse. The student nurse extern will partner with an experienced registered nurse to develop critical thinking skills, hone technical skills and learn how to prioritize care. The Student Nurse Externship offered at the end of Year Two of the Nursing Program will increase the students' exposure to clinical nursing. The concepts of nursing, the professional image and the socialization and transitioning into professional practice are enhanced through continued clinical exposure.
