Molecular Unit Manager

Texas Biomedical Research Institute is actively seeking a highly skilled and motivated Molecular Biologist to fill the role of Molecular Unit Manager in the Integrated Research and Technology Core at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas. The incumbent will play a pivotal role in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Molecular Biology Unit. They will develop study designs, process samples, perform instrumental and specimen quality control, and conduct conventional data analyses. This position involves the management of various processes and procedures, including scheduling, budgeting, space and materials management, vendor and equipment coordination, and ensuring compliance with all required regulations and guidelines. The successful candidate will also be responsible for fostering a culture of continuous operational and quality improvement. Furthermore, they will collaborate closely with the Director of the Integrated Research and Technology Core to develop metric collection tools to measure laboratory performance, service delivery information, and quality data.


The Role:
• Overseeing Technical and Operational Aspects: Manage the technical and operational facets of the Molecular Unit, including scheduling, daily task assignments, and activities.
• Experimentation: Develop, execute, and manage experiments, including but not limited to nucleic acid library preparations for sequencing, gene expression studies, transcriptomics, epigenetic assays, and other molecular service activities.
• Online Platform Management: Supervise the online platform for scheduling, usage tracking, supply inventory monitoring, billing, and report generation. Report directly to the Core Director.
• Data Analysis and Quality Checks: Analyze data and perform quality checks, delivering clear and timely results to team members and management.
• Equipment Maintenance: Ensure the upkeep of core equipment and assess the need for new equipment as required.
• Personnel Supervision: Oversee staff in the day-to-day operations of sample processing and data analysis.
• Training and Outreach: Develop, organize, and participate in user training sessions, scientific workshops, outreach activities, and instrument demonstrations under the guidance of the Core Director.
• Documentation: Maintain accurate procedure documentation and ensure protocols are up-to-date.
• Project Management: Execute and manage new projects, including drafting SOPs for new protocols related to standard core lab services.
• Cross-Training and Competency: Ensure adequate cross-training to maintain consistent production coverage and keep all personnel's continuing education and competencies up-to-date.


Our Ideal Candidate:
•A Master's or PhD degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, Biological Sciences, or a related field.
•A minimum of 3+ years of laboratory management experience, including managing multiple laboratory areas.
•Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
•Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical reports.
•Proficiency in writing accurate and concise documents, memos, and required correspondence.
•Competence in collecting and analyzing data using conventional statistical and computational methods.
•Effective communication skills at all levels within the laboratory and with laboratory customers.
•Strong project management, time management, and multi-tasking abilities.
•Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
•Willingness to spend 50% or more of time performing bench work and providing backup as per core scheduling.
•Ability to work independently, collaborate effectively, and provide thought leadership.
•Adaptability in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment.
•Strong organizational skills.
•In-depth understanding of common molecular technologies.
