The Addiction Recovery Management Service (ARMS) at Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking a 0.5 FTE/ 20 hours Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. The position will be 10 hours of clinical time with 10 hours of case management time.


The ARMS program treats youth under age 26 years with primary addictive disorders and comorbid mental health issues using evidence-based treatment including ACRA, CBT, DBT, and MI. The ARMS program also provides intensive parent guidance following CRAFT procedures to provide support and skills to parents of youth with addictive disorders. This clinical position includes conducting initial evaluations/assessment and providing individual and group treatment. New patient evaluations include diagnostic assessments using evidence-based measures and then recommendations for treatment. Individual and group therapy is within a cognitive-behavioral/DBT and motivational framework treating youth with significant dual diagnosis issues. ARMS provides outpatient psychopharmacology for addictive and mental health disorders; therefore the position is embedded within a multi-disciplinary team of psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, and trainees.


Position reports to Clinical Director.



Job Tasks



Screening and Assessment

  • Identify patient needs, including stage of change and readiness, in an expanding outpatient clinic serving clients with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.

  • Conduct SA and MH assessment and diagnosis, including SA and psychiatric treatment history, evidence of active withdrawal symptoms, current use assessments.

  • Identify high risk psychosocial patient/family factors that impact treatment and discharge planning.


  • Treatment Planning and Consultation

  • Identify optimum level of care.

  • Develop treatment plan consistent with patient need and readiness.

  • Identify family risk/preventive factors and structure treatment accordingly whenever possible/appropriate.

  • Maintain strong, positive relationships with Primary Care Physician and other medical staff to assure the highest quality of care to patients.

  • Participate in medical team meetings, rounds, and case conferences to provide education and consultation to improve patient care.

  • Work with family systems when appropriate and possible to involve family in recovery process.

  • Ensure accurate documentation, conforming with all state and federal regulations.


  • Treatment Services:

  • Brief, motivational intervention.

  • Psycho-education.

  • Individual evidence-based therapy (CBT/M/ACRA).

  • Group therapy.

  • CRAFT Family Interventions (will provide training for this).


  • Case Management:

  • 10 hours per week of time to support the team in finding resources for youth, completing necessary program referral paperwork, DMH applications, leasing with agencies, helping staff locate appropriate programs in the community.

  • Meeting with substance use/mental health programs in the community to understand services and expand community based resource network.

  • Maintain a list of available programs along with appropriate inclusion/exclusion criteria.

  • Act as the ARMS Tobacco Education Coordinator (TEC) as required by the state DPH licensed (training provided) and join state meetings hosted by BSAS as scheduled - ACRA/OYYAS.





  • Qualifications

    Qualifications/ Requirements

  • Master's of Social Work (MSW) from an accredited program required.

  • Massachusetts Licensed Independent Clinical Social Work (LICSW) required.

  • Experience in assessment and evidence-based treatments of substance use and co-morbid disorders in youth.
    CBT/MI experience.
