Chief Objective of Position:

The Assistant Director of Athletics for Operations will provide leadership and management to all aspects of the Christopher Newport University Department of Athletics.


This is an internal posting open to current employees of Christopher Newport University.


Work Tasks:



  • Serve as the sport administrator and supervisor for the head coaches as assigned by the Director of Athletics to provide guidance and leadership to the head coach for each sport as needed on budget, personnel, operational and strategic initiatives.

  • Oversee the department's facility and operations units to include recruiting, training, and supervision of student and part-time employees in an effort to maintain and care for all athletic facilities.

  • Continually assess and recommend maintenance and capital construction needs to the Director of Athletics.

  • Ensure each athletic facility is prepared and ready to host participants and spectators for practice and competition.

  • Coordinate the routine maintenance and housekeeping necessary to achieve a high level of customer service for participants and spectators.

  • Routinely communicate with head coaches to understand their facility needs and manage the daily use schedule for all athletic facilities to ensure efficient communication between all constituents to proactively identify and resolve scheduling conflicts.

  • Establish and manage stadium light schedules to ensure efficient and responsible energy consumption.

  • Coordinate the set-up of all track and field meets to include collaboration with the Director of Track & Field along with supervising all staff required to perform duties.

  • Schedule and supervise third-party rental organizations in their the use of outdoor athletic facilities to conduct camps, clinics, practices, competitions and other uses as approved by the Director of Athletics.

  • Serve as the Department of Athletics liaison with the following internal department's:

    • University Grounds - to ensure a positive and professional relationship in coordinating the necessary planning and maintenance of all athletic playing surfaces to ensure the needs of all teams and students are met.

    • Scheduling and Events - to ensure that all home athletic events are communicated to campus partners in a timely manner.

    • Plant operations - to schedule and manage work orders.




  • Develops and maintains a very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies including students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees.

  • Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude and treat everyone with dignity and respect. Fully support the "Student's First" value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service.

  • Reviews and communicates safety issues to assure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absence.

  • Immediately report work-related incidents to your supervisor and participate in accident investigation requests.

  • Promote a safe and healthy work environment by ensuring the implementation of safety regulations and applicable standards, processes, and programs established for employees under your supervision.

  • Ensure employees under your supervision are trained in safety standards and procedures for their positions.

  • This position is designated as a "responsible employee" who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) related to position:



  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include nights and weekends.

  • Ability to travel to road athletic events. Ability to multi task, work independently and in a team environment.

  • Ability to train and supervise part-time, interns, student workers and game day staff.


Required Education:



  • Masters degree, or bachelor's degree and experience that equates to an advanced degree.


Experience Required:



  • Prior experience working in a sports or recreation environment.

  • Prior experience working in facility or maintenance operations.

  • Current Christopher Newport University employee.


Additional Consideration - Experience:



  • Prior experience working at a college or university.

  • Prior experience in athletic administration.


Salary Information:

Starting at $72,949, commensurate with education and experience
