Services for Older Refugees SpecialistDescription/Job Summary This position is responsible for assessing the needs of senior refugees (60+ years) living in the Baltimore area and coordinating referrals to services. This includes, but is not limited to, registering clients for Citizenship classes, referrals to English language classes, and referrals to local and mainstream aging services providers Responsibilities/Duties


Essential Job Functions:



  • Provide information to program participants on services in their area and facilitate access to services

  • Identify and establish relationships with local mainstream aging service providers

  • Conduct activities to familiarize refugees, partners, agencies, and other stakeholders with available services, explain purpose of service, and facilitate access.

  • Liaise with BCCC Refugee Program Manager to maintain ties with refugee families and provide support when necessary

  • Attend trainings, events, and meetings for programs (occasionally outside of regular hours)

  • Document client's program enrollment and keep records, such as case notes, for program in accordance with requirements

  • Establish virtual and/or in-person relationships with clients utilizing telephonic interpretation as needed

  • Initiate and maintain client case files, updating with case notes at regular intervals

  • Interface with resettlement agency partner contacts to establish and advance client case files



Scope of Responsibility:


Knows the formal and informal departmental goals, standards, policies and procedures as it relates to student advancement for the division and the college at large. Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department.



Decision Making:


On a regular basis, exercises judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people and quality of services within the functional area.



Communication:


Exchanges non-routine information using tact and persuasion as appropriate. Require good oral and written communication skills.



Physical Requirements:



  • Sitting in normal seated position for extended periods of time.

  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arms in any direction.

  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.

  • Ability to see within normal parameters.

  • Ability to hear within normal range.

  • Ability to move about.

Required Qualifications


Education:



  • Required: Bachelor's degree in social work.



Experience:



  • 1-3 years of professional work experience.

  • Familiarity with Maryland and Baltimore social service providers.

  • Experience working with clients with limited English proficiency.

  • Experience working with case management; experience working with seniors preferred.

  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail required.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Experience working in a multi-cultural environment a plus.
