What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Startup and Commissioning Group provides commissioning services to this senior laboratory in the DOE system, our campus spans 40 square miles and has almost 900 individual facilities. This position provides an ever changing daily routine with a mix of site wide field work and office work. Your projects will represent a broad range of scope ranging from simple HVAC and I&C upgrades to new research laboratories and infrastructure installations. With an increased effort in revitalization of existing facilities and new construction your skills will be utilized to insure that our facilities are operational and ready for use supporting Los Alamos National Laboratory's mission to solve national security challenges through simultaneous excellence.

The Commissioning Professional plans and conducts startup activities on projects at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Services include pre-commissioning, commissioning, startup testing, and initial operation to confirm that the facility and/or systems are capable of meeting specifications and design intent. They will act as the LANL liaison for third party commissioning subcontractors, provide technical guidance, assist in the navigation of LANL policies and procedures and will manage subcontracts. The Commissioning Professional will also coordinate startup between project engineering, construction, project operations personnel, subcontractors and vendors. They will provide input to project management, engineering, and construction to ensure startup requirements are incorporated into project activities, including review of project designs and construction to ensure operability and operating personnel safety.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of startup, operation, maintenance, or testing and has the ability to ensure quality work by defining project startup objectives and ensure that proper startup work plans, guidelines, and procedures are established and that work is performed within schedule and budget.
  • Knowledge of industry and regulatory standards and facility operations criteria pertinent to equipment operation, startup, commissioning, and design activities.
  • Ability to provide safety leadership, training, accident prevention, and implementing a Zero Accidents philosophy while assuring safety and security compliance.
  • Demonstrated experience in a lead role over other Startup staff for specific tasks as assigned and is able to direct and monitor assigned project startup and operations, and coordination with construction during field check out and pre- commissioning and testing and execution of the startup in the field.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of engineered systems and applications of startup, commissioning, and equipment and systems operations, possesses skills to contribute to the development of technical objectives and principles to achieve goals in creative and effective ways.
  • Knowledge and understanding of legal requirements affecting construction management administration.
  • Technical knowledge in an applicable field engineering discipline, including knowledge of building codes, engineering standards, and construction technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions in execution of equipment/system startup and commissioning, project management, construction management and design practice and/or administration.
  • Ability to conceptualize major elements of construction management programs and/or policies.
  • Demonstrated experience in the preparation and presentation of oral and written reports to include Commissioning Plan, Pre-commissioning Checklist, Functional Test Procedures, and Final Commissioning and Test Summary Reporting.

Education/Experience:

Position requires bachelor's degree in an Engineering or scientific discipline from an accredited institution and 12 years directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience specializing in an engineering discipline/engineering design including knowledge of building codes, engineering standards, and construction technologies.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Expert knowledge of the Laboratory's construction management policies, practices and procedures.
  • Experience with Building Automation and Data Acquisition Systems (BAS).
  • Familiarity with LEED principles and guidelines.
  • Familiarity with DOE HPSB Guiding principles.

Training/Certifications:

Commissioning Certification recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy.
