The Global Economy and Development program at Brookings aims to shape the policy debate on how to improve global economic cooperation and fight global poverty and sources of social stress. The program’s research agenda is related to policies and trends affecting developing countries including global poverty, universal education, the global middle class, fragile states, globalization, inequality, foreign assistance and development effectiveness.

Position Location: This position is hybrid. Hybrid positions combine regular in-person presence at our Washington, DC office with the option of at least two days of remote work each week.

The Global Economy and Development (Global) program at Brookings equips global, national, and local policymakers with the cutting-edge knowledge and actionable tools they need to address shared challenges and achieve a more equitable, sustainable, and prosperous economic system for all. The Center for Universal Education (CUE), founded in 2002 as part of the Global Economy and Development program, is one of the leading policy centers focused on universal quality education across the world. We develop and disseminate effective solutions for quality education and skills development. We envision a world where all children and youth have the skills they need to succeed in the 21st century. The Center plays a critical role in influencing the development of policy related to global education and promotes actionable strategies for governments, civil society, and private enterprise.

CUE is seeking a Senior Project Assistant to work across multiple workstreams and projects within the Center, with a particular focus on the Family Engagement project and Millions Learning project teams. This is a one-year termed appointment, with the potential to renew.

Project Assistance (75%)

  • Provides administrative support and coordinates the planning, execution, and follow-up related to virtual and/or in-person meetings and workshops;

  • Serves as a project liaison and note-taker for meetings, convenings, workshops, and other program related conversations;

  • Closely monitors and adjusts project timelines and work plans, communicates upcoming deadlines and priorities, and works closely with other members of the team to ensure smooth, on-schedule implementation of project activities;

  • In coordination with the program’s internal teams (finance, contracts, communications), serve as the projects’ point person for related activities to coordinate timeline workflows and attention to processes;

  • Coordinates with external consultants including interpretation and translation services for research activities, communications services, etc.;

  • Organizes the project’s events calendar, including scheduling and drafting agendas for meetings

  • Tracks relevant virtual and/or in-person global education events through which the project could share CUE findings, connect with other actors, etc.;

  • Regularly tracks and inputs relevant data into project monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) plans and trackers;

  • Serves as a primary point of contact with global partners and colleagues of the team, regularly communicating via email and related platforms about relevant project activities, deadlines, scheduling, events, etc.

  • Contributes to the project’s social media presence, including making postings on relevant social media sites, and proactively identifying and carrying out innovative strategies using social media to amplify the visibility of research insights;

  • Assists with travel and event logistics for international events, including supporting with contracting processes, coordinating with vendors, and supporting with travel arrangements;

  • Supports with tracking and submitting project expenses; and

  • Other administrative duties as assigned.

Research Assistance (25%)

  • Supports research, review, compiling, and processing data and information on education-related issues themes from various sources related to the work of the team;

  • Assists with the drafting, editing, and/or proofreading of briefing documents, project reports, concept notes, and other internal and external written research documents;

  • Supports content development for blogs and other communications pieces, and drafts or contributes to communications pieces under the guidance of other team members;

  • Monitors and summarizes current events, debates, policy analysis, and research related to the field of education;

  • Collects, organizes, and tracks data submissions and documentation from research partners;

  • Other research assistance duties as needed.

Education/Expereince Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in education, sociology, economics, international affairs, political science or related social science field required. Strong academic record. Minimum of one year of combined work and internship experience in project or research support, engaging in education or related work and/or work in an academic, think-tank or NGO environment. Prior experience organizing high-level events and meetings with senior stakeholders is a plus. Experience living, working, and/or studying abroad is a plus. Spanish, French or other language fluency is a plus. Having worked on research projects is also a plus.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are key to this position’s success, including editing and proofreading. Proficiency in all Microsoft Office Suite programs required. Cooperative attitude and flexibility with the ability to work as part of a team. Administrative experience, sharp attention to detail.

Familiarity with qualitative research methods such as conducting literature reviews, web research, case study research, and qualitative coding. Ability to multi-task and meet multiple deadlines in a timely manner, within a fast-paced work environment. Familiarity with quantitative research methods such as cleaning and processing survey data a plus.

A high cultural competency, professional demeanor and level of comfort working with diverse individuals and groups from around the world. Ability to work well pressing timelines with poise and discretion and to exercise mature judgment. Knowledge of global education issues strongly preferred.

Complete fluency in written and spoken English is required.
