The Hussman Institute has an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate 1, SOM position. The incumbent supports research activities for the assigned division by conducting laboratory experiments on assigned research projects. Moreover, the incumbent operates with the goal of advancing his/her expertise through continued education, training, and research.

  • Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens or tissue cultures.


  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.


  • Performs a variety of routine assays, tests, and studies.


  • Performs calculations to complete research test results, collects data, and performs statistical analysis of laboratory results.


  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions



The Hussman Institute for Human Genomics (HIHG) at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is seeking a research associate to work in the DNA Biorepository Core under the Center for Genome Technology. Responsibilities will include performing a variety of complex technical skills involved in conducting biological research laboratory experiments to obtain data for research purposes; compile, analyze, document and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results. Confer with Biorepository supervisors to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments; make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular equipment as required. Review laboratory methods manual, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments. Determine and set up instruments, material and apparatus and operate laboratory equipment required for specific tests. Molecular techniques include, but are not limited to DNA and RNA extraction from blood, tissues, hair, and other specimens as required; agarose gel electrophoresis, nanodrop and Qubit quantitation, and tissue culture. Candidate will also be required to prepare culture media, chemicals, reagents and solutions.
