ABOUT THE ENTOMOLOGY DEPARTMENT:


  • Research, teaching, and extension faculty and students are located at the Athens, Tifton, and Griffin Campuses.

  • Entomology houses diverse research programs that emphasize sustainability and systems-based approaches addressing environmental threats, food security, and human health. Program emphasis areas include Agroecosystems and Integrated Pest Management, Vector and Medical Entomology, Wetland and Aquatic Ecology, Urban Entomology, Invasive Species Biology, and Social Insects and Pollinator Conservation. Many research programs also advance fundamental knowledge across core disciplines including Evolutionary Biology and Systematics, Chemical Ecology, Insect-Microbe Interactions, Insect-Plant Interactions, Host-Parasite interactions, Molecular Biology, Physiology and Genomics.

  • Undergraduate majors are offered in Entomology and Applied Biotechnology. Graduate Programs include the MS and Ph.D. and a non-thesis MPPPM (Masters in Plant Protection and Pest Management). Programs of study can be developed in the research emphasis areas listed above. The Department is a part of the Integrated Life Sciences (ILS) program.

  • Graduate studies and research programs are characterized by strong interdepartmental and interdisciplinary ties. The Department hosts a large statewide Extension program focused on applied research to address the needs of farmers and the public in Georgia and worldwide.

Position Summary:

The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences seeks candidates for the position of Professor and Head of the Department of Entomology.


  • This is a 9-month +2, tenured faculty position.

  • This position is expected to be highly engaged with various commodity commissions, groups, and other stakeholders of departmental programs.

  • UGA Entomology is a highly ranked Department, and the Department Head plays a key leadership role to sustain and elevate the reputation.

  • Administer, coordinate, and develop a culture that supports student mentoring and success in next-generation science, inclusive of our world-recognized faculty, and staff. Ensure leadership of high-quality teaching, research, and extension programs and interdisciplinary work; build upon the department's success in both basic and applied research.

  • Lead the program planning and implementation process with vision and intentionality.

Personnel Management and Professional Development:


  • Manage the personnel-related issues in the department for both faculty and staff. Promote faculty professional development by advising team members through the promotion and tenure process and helping team members excel professionally. This role is also responsible for faculty performance evaluations.

  • Manage and oversee the department's faculty recruitment and professional development opportunities as well as student recruitment.

Resource and Budget Management:


  • Effectively manage a robust statewide budget to promote the goals of the department.

  • Play a proactive role in increasing extramural support for these programs; assist and mentor faculty in obtaining gifts, grants, and contracts.

  • Work closely with and be supported by the department's highly qualified fiscal and administrative professionals in the management and control of the fiscal budget.
