Position Title: Assistant Controller

Reports To: Controller

Department: Finance/Accounting

FLSA Status: Exempt

Purpose: The Assistant Controller is responsible for leading and directing the day to day operations relating to general accounting for all entities within the Company, a publicly traded organization. Direct oversight of maintenance and tracking of general ledger chart of accounts and all related account reconciliations, fixed asset accounting, lease accounting, security portfolio accounting, payroll and benefit accounting, accounts payable and employee expense reimbursements, deposit application accounting, ATM and debit card processing accounting, and the revenue accounting for non-bank subsidiaries. The Assistant Controller is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the timely and accurate completion of daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual accounting functions in order to maintain a sound control environment for internal controls over financial reporting.

Essential Functions:

  1. Works with the Controller in setting direction for the Company’s accounting policies, procedures and SOX controls.
  2. Manage the activities and functions of direct reports by establishing work plans and staff assignments, resolving difficult or complex problems, reviewing work performed, and evaluating employee performance. Ensure continuous staff development and appropriate cross training of staff to ensure adequate back-up of all functions. Be able to perform all essential functions of all direct reports as a backup to their positions.
  3. Participates in testing and implementation of new banking products, including setting up new processes. Identify and implement improvements to current processes, to ensure accurate accounting and reporting.
  4. Manages the reviews of general ledger and bank account reconciliations for all entities. Maintains and enforces the general ledger reconciliation processes including reviews, approvals and clearing outstanding items.
  5. Manages the month-end, quarter-end and year-end processes for closing the books for all entities.
  6. Fields calls and questions from employees on General Ledger account usage. Confers as needed with the Controller as to where items should be recorded. Ensures consistent and accurate reporting for income and expenses through review of journal entries on a daily basis to ensure accurate financial reports at month end.
  7. Provides assistance and guidance to auditors, examiners and tax accountants during audits, exams and tax preparation, as well other operational areas including production of support as requested.
  8. Assists in preparing and/or reviewing supporting schedules to support the filing of regulatory reports, Form 10-K, Form 10-Q, and Proxy Statements.
  9. Maintain accounting records in all assigned areas in an organized manner to facilitate reviews and audits of the Company’s financial records. Ensure written procedures reflect current processes.
  10. Demonstrate the standards and principles of the Five Star Bank experience in every interaction with internal and external customers, associates, and stakeholders. Incorporate the high-performance behaviors of teamwork, leading by example, and service in every facet of work.

Job Related Qualifications – Education and Prior Experience:

Required:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Prior Experience: 7+ years of accounting experience in the financial services industry

Preferred:

  • Education: Master's Degree
  • Prior Experience: 10+ years of Financial Services and/or Public Company Accounting experience
  • Licenses or Accreditation: Certified Public Accountant

Competencies:

  1. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Power Point) and should have a strong advanced knowledge of Excel with the ability to learn and utilize new and existing banking and accounting software applications.
  2. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet established deadlines and possess a high level of attention to detail to ensure accuracy.
  3. Analytical ability to interpret data and present it in a meaningful and easily understood form while providing recommendations.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills needed to provide information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, written form, e-mail and in person.
  5. Proven experience demonstrating strong management and leadership success. Excellent interpersonal skills capable of managing up and dropping down as needed.
  6. Strong knowledge and understanding of Accounting concepts/standards (US GAAP, SEC Regulations) and SOX compliance.
