Job Description:

The Department of Public Administration at Binghamton University seeks applications for an open rank faculty appointment for a person with expertise in local government to begin fall 2024. Binghamton University holds a Carnegie R1 designation for a high level of research productivity. The Department of Public Administration is home to a NASPAA-accredited Master of Public Administration (MPA) program which provides opportunities for students to specialize in local government management, nonprofit management, sustainable communities, and genocide and mass atrocity prevention. Several dual and accelerated degree options are available for students. In addition, a new Master of Public Policy Program will begin in Fall 2024.

We welcome applications from individuals who are prepared to teach at least two core courses in the MPA program as well as electives in local government. Examples of courses include those that address foundational work in public administration (such as 21st Century Governance, or Foundations of Public Service), as well as leadership, human resources, and methods courses. The teaching load for this position is the equivalent of two 4-credit courses each fall and spring semester. Because this search is open-rank, we prefer candidates with an established record of high quality, peer-reviewed research, typically reflected by tenure and promotion at other institutions. We will also consider candidates who are earlier in their professional careers and who have not yet earned tenure.

We seek applicants who are committed to contributing to our diverse and inclusive teaching, research and working environment and who support our mission "to enhance the commitment and capacity of our students as well as local government and nonprofit partners to be effective public service leaders." We use an integrated and engaged approach to scholarship, teaching and service. Department faculty are strong scholars, innovative teachers, engaged members of the community, and leaders in the profession. More about the department is available at: https://www.binghamton.edu/public-administration/.

Requirements:

Competitive candidates will be active scholars and effective teachers, with experience in core public administration topics. Research and teaching experience in the subfield of local government is very important. Background in economic development would be a plus, but is not essential. Experience with and commitment to NASPAA (Network of Schools of Public Affairs and administration) standards and accreditation are also important to us.

Eligible candidates must hold a Ph.D. in public administration or related field, or have completed their Ph.D. by September 1, 2024.
