Job Description:



The University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW–Madison), the state's public flagship institution of higher learning, seeks an experienced, innovative, and collaborative leader to serve as its next Executive Director of Student Financial Aid.


Under the direction of Derek Kindle, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management, the Executive Director of Student Financial Aid (Executive Director) will serve as a member of the enrollment management leadership team integral in the development of a comprehensive and strategic enrollment plan with a focus on increasing access and the wide spectra of diversity at UW–Madison.


Extensive knowledge and experience in student financial aid will be required to manage a group of team members charged with administering a financial aid program consisting of federal, state, institutional, and private funds that exceed $617 million annually. The successful candidate will need to effectively communicate with constituencies across campus and beyond to navigate the large, complex service- and research-oriented community. Inspirational leadership, vision, policy expertise, commitment to shared governance, adaptability, and collaborative skills will be fundamental qualities.


Responsibilities for the Executive Director of Student Financial Aid include but are not limited to the following:


  • Provide leadership and direction to team members involved in all financial aid operations, including processing, awarding, and financial aid advising services for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, as well as the Student Jobs website and scholarship administration.




  • Serve as a member of the Division of Enrollment Management leadership team and assist in divisional strategic goal setting and establishing metrics associated with Student Financial Aid's short and long-term plans.




  • Act as a consultant to deans, directors, staff, and faculty throughout campus in matters relating to student financial aid. Advise and counsel UW-Madison and UW-System federal and state relations staff, state and federal agencies, legislators, and their staffs.




  • Demonstrate knowledge of extensive financial aid policies, procedures, and eligibility requirements for federal, state, and university programs including a considerable body of authorizing legislation and regulations that direct the awarding of funds to students based upon need.




  • Oversee financial aid activities around information dissemination regarding need-based, merit-based, and unsubsidized loan availability and application processes. Also provide counseling on the cost of attendance, money management, student debt, and loan repayment.




  • Direct the development of technological improvements regarding enhancements and maintenance of a web-based student financial services system, as well as guide exploration of federally approved non-standard term aid delivery.




  • Foster a collaborative and positive environment that promotes access and openness among team members and responsiveness to internal and external constituents.
