CHIEF ADVANCEMENT OFFICER


Office of Advancement

UC Law SF (formerly UC Hastings) was founded in 1878 as the law department of the University of California and was the first law school in California. Over the years, it has built a legacy and reputation of being a preeminent institution comprised of renowned faculty committed to the study of legal theory and research, preparing students for careers in the judicial system, public service, and industry.

The College is redefining legal education through an experiential, interdisciplinary, and international approach to the law. By integrating rigorous academics with hands-on practice, the College is preparing its graduates to tackle modern legal challenges.


THE ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) reports to the Chancellor & Dean and is a member of the College's leadership team. The CAO is responsible for and leads the College's engagement and philanthropy initiatives, including its comprehensive fundraising and alumni engagement programs. As part of this effort, the CAO manages a personal portfolio of major and principal gift prospects.


Key duties and responsibilities for this position include:


  • Manage and lead the Office of Advancement and serve as the external facing leader of the department. Supervise Director-level members of the team in the areas of development, alumni engagement, and advancement operations. Work closely with the Chancellor & Dean on cultivating and securing major and principal gifts. Liaise with the Foundation Board of Trustees to create and execute volunteer-driven initiatives that increase revenues to support strategic goals. Supervise and partner with the Executive Director of the Alumni Association to ensure a robust and strategic program of alumni engagement and community-building. Develop and oversee strategies for alumni outreach and identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major and principal gift prospects and donors. Manage relationships with administrators, faculty, staff, and key volunteers to develop strategies for coordinated solicitation. Recruit Foundation Board of Trustee members and volunteers as partners in donor/prospect cultivation and solicitation. Build and strengthen relationships with the Foundation governing bodies and the College's Board of Directors. Personally meet with key prospects and travel as needed for optimal cultivation and solicitation of prospects. Partner with the College's Center Directors for obtaining financial support from firms, foundations, and corporations. Report to the Chancellor & Dean and the College's governing Board of Directors on fundraising progress. Build and secure investment in and implementation of best practices in all of the activities of the advancement office. Other related responsibilities as assigned.




REQUIREMENTS:


Education & Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree. 10+ years building development programs with an emphasis on individual major and principal gifts. Experience in a leadership role in one or more successful capital campaigns. Experience managing, motivating and mentoring staff.


Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


  • Demonstrated success in personally cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding six-, seven-, and eight-figure gifts from individuals. Significant fundraising success with individual major and principal gifts. Experience working with sophisticated volunteers and a clear, concise, and engaging presentation style. Ability to speak clearly, write persuasively, and listen actively to internal and external constituencies. Ability to provide strong support and inspire action by projecting dedication to higher education, particularly legal education. Must have or be able to quickly develop a strong knowledge of the Bay Area philanthropy community. Willingness and ability to travel and to work occasional weekends and evenings. Must have a valid driver's license.
