Job Description:

Job Title: Optical Metasurface Designer

Location: Austin, TX Type: Full Time

About Neurophos: Neurophos has spent 3 years in stealth R&D conceiving, modeling, & refining a technology platform that has the potential to '100x' key performance metrics in neural network computing, including in the exploding field of Large Language Models. Leveraging new physics field of metamaterials (which its founders are pioneers in), Neurophos is able to create spatial light modulators of unprecedented speed, density, and power-efficiency. Combing these Metasurfaces with more conventional optoelectronics unlocks a compute- in-memory optical computer that dramatically outperforms anything that exists today; and in fact anything that trends project to exist for decades to come.

With the raising of the company's first non-stealth funding round, Neurophos is growing its team and beginning to realize it's Optical Computing Platform.

The Role and Responsibilities: The Metasurface Engineer is instrumental in ongoing development of Neurophos' core dynamic metasurface technology. The key responsibilities of the role are:
  • Lead the design and optimization of metasurface elements for Neurophos' AI accelerator chip, utilizing metamaterial principles to achieve desired optical functionalities.
  • Employ advanced simulation tools such as Ansys HFSS, Lumerical, and Comsol to model and simulate the electromagnetic behavior of metasurface structures.
  • Design metasurface elements to manipulate light at the nanoscale, including functionalities such as phase modulation, polarization control, and beam steering, while adhering to CMOS fabrication constraints.
  • Collaborate closely with the optical, silicon photonics, and CMOS process engineering teams to integrate metasurface components into the chip architecture, ensuring compatibility with CMOS fabrication techniques.
  • Conduct rigorous electromagnetic simulations to optimize metasurface designs for performance metrics such as efficiency, bandwidth, and angular response, while considering CMOS fabrication limitations.
  • Prototype and facilitate the CMOS-compatible fabrication of metasurface structures using state-of-the-art CMOS processes, collaborating with internal and external fabrication facilities as necessary.

Requirements:
  • PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field with a focus on metamaterials and computational electromagnetics.
  • Proven experience (minimum 3 years) in designing and simulating metasurface elements for optical applications, with a strong understanding of metamaterial concepts and effective medium theory.
  • Proficiency in simulation software such as Ansys HFSS, Lumerical, Comsol, or equivalent, for electromagnetic modeling and design optimization.
  • Solid foundation in physics, particularly electromagnetism and optics, with the ability to apply theoretical principles to practical design problems.
  • Familiarity with CMOS fabrication techniques and constraints, with experience in designing metasurfaces compatible with CMOS processes.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

What We Offer:
  • Opportunity to work at the forefront of metamaterials research and development, contributing to cutting-edge optical technologies with applications in AI hardware acceleration.
  • A key role in a cutting-edge AI hardware startup located in Austin, TX.
  • An opportunity to work in a small team of some of the smartest people in the industry.
  • Competitive compensation and equity options.
  • Opportunities for personal and professional growth in a dynamic industry.
