This is a full-time position M-F 945am to 630pm.

Job description



This is a rare opportunity to join a highly specialized team of histology specialists at mass general, the opportunity to learn new and exciting techniques while serving the patients of your community. The Histology Specialist II reports to the Laboratory Supervisor. Under supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor or Senior Histology Specialist, performs routine lab functions to produce histologic preparations for examination by residents and staff pathologist.


Must have thorough understanding of the theories, practice and techniques used in histology to include fixation, decalcification, processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special stains, immunohistochemistry staining and frozen sections. Must be able to trouble shoot and rectify problems with minimal supervisory intervention.


Must be fully competent with all laboratory instrumentation to include pH meter, balances, microtomes, tissue processors, cryostats, coverslippers, etc.


Must be able to prepare percent, molar and normal solutions and stains.


Perform routine immunohistochemical stains both manually and on automated instrumentation as required.


Fixes tissues in appropriate fixatives; dehydrates with graded alcohols; clears with xylene; impregnates with paraffin wax using an automated tissue processor.


Embed specimens ensuring proper orientation. Produces 4-micron sections using a microtome and appropriate knives; floats sections on a water bath; collects sections on a glass slide; dries in a slide dryer for a specified time


Stains slides, with routine and special stains according to approved procedures to enhance certain tissue elements required for diagnosis. Coverslips and labels-stained slides. Examines slides with a microscope to ascertain that the results are satisfactory.


Ensures all blocks and slides are clerically correct. Assembles and collates slides. Distribute slides to residents and staff pathologists.


Determines when prescribed techniques and apparatus should be modified in order to meet required quality standards.


Prepares specimens for a rapid frozen section diagnosis using liquid nitrogen and a cryostat microtome. Stains frozen sections using various stains.


Shares responsibility for preparation of solutions and reagents in accordance with approved procedures. Maintains quality control records. Keeps accurate records of blocks and slides produced. Files tissue blocks, ensuring each is properly labeled.


Other Duties as assigned.



Qualifications



Must be able to review slides for quality control.


Must be able to correctly and accurately embed all human tissue to include skin and or animal tissues.


Must follow minimum national cutting standards of 50 blocks per hour embedding and 30 slides per hour cutting.


Must be able cut artifact free two micrometer sections


Must be able to perform a high-quality manual H&E stain


Must be able to competently perform all special and immunohistochemistry stains with minimum supervision using both manual and automated methodologies.


Must have the ability to follow established technical, safety and clerical procedures.


Must have manual dexterity and motor coordination


Be attentive to detail and precise in performing technical tasks

Qualifications

Experience/Education/Certifications



• Three to four years of clinical experience, or five to six years of histology experience in a research setting.


  • High volume Clinical lab experienced preferred

  • Ability to be able to identify different cell types and cell structures is a plus.

  • Minimum of a high school degree or graduate of NCCALS approved school of histotechnology.
