Job Description:

BASIC FUNCTION: The primary purpose of the position is to direct the day-to-day functions of the nursing unit and to plan, organize, develop and direct the overall operation of the Department in accordance with current Federal, State, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations to assure that the highest degree of quality care is provided to the residents at all times. Provide professional assistance to all residents and staff of St. Paul's Senior Homes and Services when not precluded by other duties.
 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Assumes responsibility and accountability of directing the activities and programs of the facility, in consultation with the Administrator, COO, or CEO as necessary, in the absence of the Administrator

  • Evaluates and implements recommendations from the facility's committees and/or consultants.

  • Plans, develops, organizes implements, evaluates, and directs the Nursing Department, as well as its programs and activities, in accordance with current State and Federal regulations and guidelines that govern Nursing Facilities, maintaining regulatory compliance at all times.

  • Interprets and implements the facility's policies and procedures to employees, residents, families, visitors, government agencies, etc.

  • Participates in the development of a plan of correction for deficiencies noted during survey inspections in co-operation with the Administrator.

  • Coordinates the Annual Patient Care Policy Committee meeting.

  • Monitors the Infection Control, Safety and Quality Assurance programs of the Department.

  • Assists the MDS Nurse., Charge Nurses and Director of Staff Development to ensure compliance with all Federal, State and Local regulations.Directs and supervises the Unit Clerk ensuring the appropriate cordial response to residents, visitors, physicians and staff and the employee’s productive work performance.

  • Coordinates personnel development and staff mentoring.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be able to communicate with, be interested in, and have compassion for the aged. Must have good communication skills, both verbal and written. Must have excellent organizational skills to meet deadlines and goals. Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action. Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public. Must be knowledgeable in nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as the laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to skilled nursing care and personnel administration. Must possess the ability to work harmoniously with, and supervise both professional and non-professional personnel. Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures that are necessary for providing quality care and maintaining a socially, morally and fiscally responsible operation. Must be able to cope with multiple responsibilities in a changing and evolving environment.
 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. A minimum of 3 years management experience in a skilled nursing facility. Recommended background would be five years as a Director of Nursing or a combination of three years as Director of Nursing and two years as Director of Staff Development. Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of California, and must possess a current CPR card.
