Job Description:

SUMMARY 

The California Border Infectious Disease Surveillance (BIDS) Program focuses on enhancing surveillance, laboratory testing, and reporting of urgent and routine infectious diseases in the US border region. BIDS is a collaborative between the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Office of Binational Border Health (OBBH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, and the Imperial County Public Health Department.

The BIDS Farmworker Health Assessment Project Coordinator will work specifically on a farmworker health assessment project in California that aims to understand the public health needs of farmworker populations in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The incumbent will work closely with the CDPH-OBBH Infectious Disease Manager, BIDS Surveillance Officer, other CDPH-OBBH Program Staff, and external stakeholders to implement the project. The BIDS Farmworker Health Assessment Project Coordinator will also provide programmatic supervision to one part-time Project Assistant assigned to the project.

The hourly range for this position is $22.00 to $26.98 per hour depending on experience/qualification.  

The position is funded through July 31, 2024, with the possibility for extension.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 Specific activities include, but are not limited to:


  • Leading protocol development and implementation for the farmworker health assessment project;

  • Engaging partners, key stakeholders, and vendors in the border region and throughout California for collaboration;

  • Reviewing existing data, literature, reports, presentations, etc. on the study population through web search and partner outreach to inform the project;

  • Leading survey development for key informant interviews and the rapid community assessment;

  • Participating in the development and implementation of project budgets, work plans, and progress reports;

  • Supervision of field survey and interview implementation and practice to ensure project goals and objectives are being met;

  • Identify opportunities for culturally and linguistically appropriate partnership and local program and service changes to increase accessibility, confidence in and uptake of COVID-19 vaccine.

  • Assisting with data management activities such as data entry and analyses;

  • Leading the preparation and presentation of reports (e.g., technical reports, manuscripts, PowerPoint presentations) on project activities;

  • Educating local community stakeholders, healthcare providers and other key public health partners on project activities;

  • Ensuring appropriate communication and coordination with CDPH-OBBH staff and project partners such as: County of San Diego Public Health, County of Imperial Public Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and others (NGO’s, CBO’s, vendors) as needed;

  • Attending and providing updates/presenting at relevant meetings;

  • Developing recommendations for public health agencies and healthcare providers on the farmworker population based on the results of the project;

  • Collaborating with personnel from other programs and branches at the California Department of Public Health, as needed;

  • Provide supervision to a project assistant assigned to the project;

  • Communicating and collaborating with individuals from diverse backgrounds with cultural awareness; and

  • Occasionally traveling to attend meetings and meet with public health partners.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS 

Education/Experience 


  • Undergraduate degree in public health, health sciences, nursing, or health-care field, required.

  • Postgraduate degree in public health, health sciences, nursing, or health-care field, preferred.

  • At least 2 years’ experience working in public health or related field, preferred.

Other Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities 


  • Ability to speak and write fluently in both English and Spanish, preferred

  • Knowledge of public health principles

  • Familiarity with HIPAA regulations as well as other laws regarding human subjects research and confidentiality of personal information, preferred.

  • Computer skills including database management (MS Excel required)

  • Experience preparing and delivering presentation to partners

  • Strong sensitivity for diverse cultural practices, and etiquette

  • Ability to work independently and in a team

  • Ability to demonstrate leadership, organization, and decision-making skills

  • Ability to maintain strong working relationships with diverse partners

  • Experience working with underrepresented groups or in multicultural settings, desired.

  • Ability to maintain collaborative and professional working relationships with diverse partners and a strong sensitivity for diverse cultural practices and etiquette.

  • Ability to work independently and lead a team.

  • Ability to demonstrate leadership, organization, and decision-making skills.

Must have a valid California driver’s license, proof of vehicle insurance, and reliable transportation or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
