The LSU Health Foundation, New Orleans is an institutionally-related 501(c)(3) organization that supports LSU Health Sciences Center - New Orleans and its fourfold mission of education, patient care, research, and community outreach. The mission of the Foundation is to inspire donors to invest in the LSU Health Sciences Center - New Orleans and its future and to properly steward those contributions, and to help meet the ever evolving needs of the LSU Health Sciences Center - New Orleans by providing new philanthropic and business resources, partnerships, programs, real estate and property leases, auxiliary businesses and other services that support and strengthen the educational and community mission of the LSU Health Sciences Center.

Summary/Objectives

This position plays a key role in the Foundation's exciting goal to increase philanthropy by 50% to meet the rapidly growing needs of LSU Health New Orleans with a specific focus on the LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center. As part of a fast-paced environment, this position identifies, develops, broadens, and maximizes major gift support from alumni, residents and patients within the LSU School of Medicine. With a large emphasis being placed on our newly established grateful patient program.

The Director of Development, School of Medicine (Oncology Focus) reports to the Chief Development Officer with a dotted line to the Chief Administrative Officer of the LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center

Essential Functions

  • Identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major donors to LSU Health and to the LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center, with a specific focus on, but not limited to, grateful patients, alumni and residents of the School of Medicine,
  • Simultaneously manages portfolio of 125-150 prospects and donors, prepares and executes solicitation strategy plans for each, including working with, physicians, board members, and volunteers, to solicit gifts of $25,000 or more for established strategic philanthropic priorities as identified by the faculty of the School of Medicine and the LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center,
  • Works closely with physicians identified to participate in our grateful patient program to provide one-on-one training, support and additional resources to maximize patient referrals and successful solicitation of grateful patients,
  • Works closely with physicians to identify and develop case statements for support,
  • Works closely with Director of LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center to develop case statements for support
  • Works in a metrics and goal driven environment requiring a minimum number of face-to-face visits with donors, dollar goals, and works effectively with other members of the Foundation team on identifying, cultivating, and stewarding major donors,
  • Regularly reports major gift activities and results against targets to achieve performance metrics of prospects cultivated, calls made, proposals developed, solicitations, gifts closed and dollars raised,
  • Works collaboratively and positively with colleagues to maximize the giving potential of donors to ensure the success of the Grateful Patient Program and overall team,
  • Produces gift proposals, contact reports and appropriate follow-up materials; records activities and notes in donor tracking information system,
  • Understands privacy and confidentiality best practices and HIPPA compliance to ensure the protection of donor information, including permitted PHI.

Required Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience in identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors and donor prospects with a proven track record of securing major and planned gifts.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in higher education or health care fundraising and development experience. In addition, one (1) to three (3) years' direct work experience as fund raising professional with a major gift portfolio
  • Proficiency with philanthropy related information systems such as Blackbaud's Raiser's Edge

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE)

In addition, a successful team member in this role must demonstrate the following:

  • Outstanding oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledgeable of applicable tax laws, the fund-raising process, and the concept of donor relations
  • Must have a strong customer service orientation
  • Must be able to organize and prioritize work, be proactive, take initiative, resolve problems, follow through, and simultaneously manage multiple priorities to ensure goals are met in a timely manner
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in a high-performing, fast-paced professional environment
  • Excellent communication and time management skills required
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain a strong sense of urgency coupled with demonstrated success in management of multiple priorities
  • Demonstrated success in working independently but also collaboratively in a team setting
  • Ability to envision and execute new ways to deliver value to donors/clients
  • Ability to maintain confidential information
  • Strong commitment to a major, land grant/research university in an urban environment

Some local travel is required for this position.
