Position Summary


The Nursing Director of Acute Care Pediatric Services is the key leader of nursing and patient care services for the UI Stead Family Children's Hospital pediatric inpatient, outpatient, and related services. This position is accountable for leadership and management of the performance of the Acute Care Pediatric Services for the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care within the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Clinical Enterprise by the initiation, promotion, and maintenance of clinical, research, financial and administrative principals. The Director of Acute Care Pediatrics is accountable to enhance the organization's capacity to perform by addressing the patient and family centered care management, strategic leadership, change management, quality management, relationship management, information knowledge management, resource management and personal/professional development objectives that follow.


Key Areas of Responsibilities and Specific Job Tasks

  • Human Resources Management: Work across multiple nursing functions and with medical and hospital leaders to create a consistent approach to HR management. Hold unit leaders within a department accountable for high performance and high engagement by articulating expectations, monitoring performance, and providing feedback consistently across areas of responsibility. Approve resource allocations and staffing models. Develop and retain qualified nursing leadership staff and build an effective leadership team

  • Financial and Data Management and Analysis: Develop strategy for budget priorities for multiple nursing education and research functions and negotiate among them to address resource issues. Hold nurse managers and other leaders accountable for managing respective budgets. Work with own leaders within and external to area to innovatively address and resolve budget issues. Establish reliable revenue cycle processes, including working with nurse managers, staff nurses and physicians on documentation to support billed charges

  • Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality and Patient Satisfaction: Work across multiple nursing functions to develop, monitor and enhance quality and service indicators and business processes. Oversee patient satisfaction and quality indicators. Assure that clinical services, educational programs, and research activities are following all applicable internal and external requirements, including Joint Commission

  • Patient Care/Services Delivery: Work across multiple nursing functions and with nurse managers and associate directors to implement best care practices and new models of care/service. Address implementation issues across nursing functions and with other departments. Incorporate the principles of Service Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations.

  • Planning and Goal Management: Develop departmental strategic plan and integrate it with other functions; guide nurse managers and associate directors in developing action plans for implementation; monitor progress to goal completion. Assure integration of goals across functions.

  • Education Programs: Administer nursing education programs. Develop effective orientation and staff development programs. Maintain a climate of learning that promotes collaborative experiences for students in the University Health Science Colleges and other health care programs. Participate in and present educational programs to staff and University colleges and programs. Develop and support efficient systems for patient education.

  • Budgeting: Knowledge of, and ability to apply, policies and practices for planning and administering a budget

  • Healthcare Regulatory Environment: Knowledge and understanding of legislation and regulatory bodies affecting healthcare and clinical research practices

  • Performance Management: Ability to apply organization's performance management system, practices, and tools to developing and improving individual, team, and organizational performance

Percent of Time: 100% - 40 hours per week

Education Required:

  • Master's degree (in nursing, MBA or healthcare related) required. If Master's/Doctorate Degree is in related field other than nursing specialty, a Baccalaureate of Science or Arts Degree in Nursing is required

Required Qualifications:

  • Current, valid license to practice nursing in Iowa
  • 7+ years of experience in an administrative position in a large, complex health care organization with demonstrated ability to work with multiple disciplines to ensure effective health care operations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to serve as a liaison and to collaborate with physicians, staff, patient, and other customers
  • Demonstrated experience assuring patient safety, quality of care and compliance in a regulatory environment with various state and federal agencies and the Joint Commission
  • Demonstrated experience developing budget strategy, priorities and negotiating resource issue
  • Must be proficient in computer and software applications

  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.



Desired Qualifications:

  • Current knowledge of University policies and procedures
  • Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body
  • Experience working in a union environment
  • Knowledge of nursing research and EBP programs related to pediatric nursing care
  • Recent experience with acute care pediatric patient populations both critical care and med/surg
  • Experience with pediatric family advisory council and/or boards
